    Coming into high school, water polo and swimming became my family; I found something that I could dedicate myself to and push myself in. Growing up in Memphis, water polo was (and still is) extremely new; a little over ten high schools competed at the state tournament. I played alongside the boys, aside from a rare girls game our coaches could put together. The Bluff City Blues were the only club I knew about in the state, and I joined them the first summer I could, with some very persistent urging from my coach. That summer, BCWP fielded a girls 18U team for the first time, and I became goalie out of necessity; I did not care for it at first. I had to restrain myself frequently; from my perspective, I was letting the defense do all the work and distantly watching the offense from across the pool. With more practice and experience, I learned that I commanded my defense; they depended on me as much as I did them. My offense needed me to get a quick pass off for the fast break or to provide some encouragement to get a play going. Suddenly, I didn't want to leave the goal; nothing in the world made me feel the way blocking a goal, making a steal, or sending a perfect pass did. 

   To finish, I want to be the best player I can be; I want to be the best player there is, but I know that isn't always possible. When I was chosen to be goalie, it was simply because I was a strong treader; I had knee problems and a love for playing in the field, but they gave me an opportunity to learn, and I took it. At first I might not have liked it, but I worked as hard as I could to get to where I am now. I know that if I am given an opportunity to play water polo in college, I will continue to push myself; I'll try to be the best. This wish doesn't necessarily make me unique, but the distance I am willing to go to make it come true does.
