After recovering from a broken arm in the sixth grade, a family friend generously gave me the scholarship to play in his rec volleyball league. It was my first year playing volleyball, and I caught onto it as fast as I fell in love with it. I received the privilege to play for my school and for club for one and a half years before moving to a small town in Ohio in 2017. In Ohio I have had the opportunity to continue playing the amazing sport.
On January 6, 2012, at the age of nine, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. My volleyball beginning was filled with the insecurity of my disease getting in the way of what I love. However, as I have grown both mentally and physically, I have realized that I would not have ever been as strong as I am now. Embracing my disease has led me to the confidence I have in overcoming difficult obstacles. It is a constant reminder that I have come so incredibly far, making my victories so much more meaningful. Through the years of playing this sport, I have come to the realization that I will never be content with “average.” Every day, every practice, every game, I tell myself that I am working to be the best player I can possibly be, the best teammate I can possibly be, the best leader I can be, and the best person I can be. Many tell me that I am such a fun and inspiring person to be around. Teammates have acknowledged me for being positive and encouraging, and coaches have thanked me for my leadership and my willingness to rapidly jump in to pick my team up and guide them. Sure, I want to be the best player I can be, but I want the same thing for my teammates as well. Teamwork is so important to me, and I strive for it every day.
Once I reach the bridge to college, I would like to major in Fine Arts. I love art, and I love expressing myself and sharing my story in creative ways. I take my education very seriously, for I have made it my goal to graduate high school with a 4.0 GPA. I fully understand that the road to success is not easy, which is what makes it so worth it.
