Why do I train so hard? Why do I push myself to excel? My "Why" is I love playing competitive volleyball. While I enjoy practice and training, I excel during competition. At the age of 12, I found volleyball. The energy, competition, and team synergy motivate me to be the best athlete and teammate I can be. Until 12, I was a competitive gymnast. After winning a state championship, I fractured my hip. Due to that injury, I decided to pursue other sports. By chance, I fell into and in love with volleyball. While I've played multiple positions (setter and outside hitter), my love is the back row. It is hard to explain how good it feels when I get a great dig! I also like the diversity of the position as the secondary setter, along with the chance to hit from the back row.
I also enjoy the team dynamic of the sport and believe I am a positive influence on the court. As my coach tells me, "I'm the "right" player for the "right" position." How she explained it to me is that she needs the right player to motivate and lead the team. The right player, who when on the court, encourages the entire team to play better. I am the player she needs on the floor to bring the energy, encouragement, and confidence. While I lead by example, I genuinely am more excited for my teammates than myself when they make a great play. Being part of a positive, hardworking team motivates me to be a better player. I have high expectations for myself and for my teammates. Together we need to work hard and improve. As for the right position, since I love digging the ball, libero is right.
I work hard to excel at all facets of my life. Academically, I take honors classes and maintain a very high GPA. I have good relationships with my teachers and am not afraid to ask for their assistance. My mother is a college professor and learning is important to me. While I love volleyball, excelling academically is a high priority. I am also very personable and enjoy meeting new people.
Overall, I'm looking for a college or university experience where I can continue to pursue my love for the game (my why), excel academically, and meet interesting, diverse people. Thank you for your consideration.
