Malia Kay - 6 Rot...Personal Statement
I’m a starting, 6-rotation, Outside Hitter for Coast VBC's 17-1 team. Last season (Coast 16-1), we earned an Open bid to GJNC's, and although initially ranked 36/36 teams, we came in 2nd in our 6-pool and advanced. We finished ranked 23rd in the nation, Open Division. During this 2016 high school varsity season I play for Del Norte High School in San Diego, CA. We won the CIF championship for our DI League and will play in round 2 of CIF State's soon. I was named the San Diego Union-Tribune Athlete of the Week (Nov 2016). Last high school season, I was named to the All League 2nd team - Avocado East League. During the 2015 club season, I was the starting Outside Hitter for San Diego Volleyball Club’s 15-1 and also earned a spot as an alternate on HP Indoors USA Select A1 team (SCVA 18th overall) - summer 2015. I am enrolled in all honors classes and have a 4.03 GPA (unweighted 3.92) and am currently enrolled in three AP classes. As a high school freshman I was named "All Tournament MVP" and "All Tournament Best Attacker" at two elite San Diego JV tournaments for Del Norte High. My brother, Jonah Kay, is also a hitter (MB) and plays for Coach Speraw at UCLA.

Similar to my brother, I am interested in playing at the Division 1 level and am very flexible with what part of the United States in which I will eventually settle for my undergraduate work. - We entered the tournament ranked 36th out of 36 teams...but we came in 2nd in our 6-pool (beating Rage) and advanced. We then lost our starting middle, could not quite get a win after that. We finished 23rd overall.

- Our team had a great run at AAU's in the 15's Premier Division. We went 2-1 during days two and three - then were knocked out of the top 8 by the gold medalists, Northern Lights - they went an impressive 26-3 sets overall (our sets against them went: 26-24, 25-20). It was a really enjoyable week!

- I've worked with Cassidy Lichtman a number of times for private and semi-private lessons at San Diego Volleyball Club. Cassidy lichtman is a USA Volleyball National Team member recently returned from the 2015 - Pan American Cup (Gold) and the Pan American Games (Gold). She is on her way to China to compete on their national team this next season.
