October 2017 Personal Statement
My name is Clara Whitaker, I am 14 years old and a Freshman at Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School in Wichita, KS. I am currently 5’8”, 125 lbs. but my doctors think I will reach 6’0”, just a little taller than my sister. I have been really working hard on my tennis and have really improved over the last 6 months. This summer I competed as the #1 seed at the South Zonals for Missouri Valley, and ended with a 3-2 record. I really enjoyed being part of a team. Prior to my high school season, I ended my summer on a high note winning the USTA MV Futures #4 U14. My second team experience was this past high school tennis season, as a Freshman. I ended my first season with a 33-4 singles record, winning 9 out of 11 tournaments, quads and/or duals. I won our City League Tournament, the Kansas 5A Regional Championship and the Kansas 5A State Singles Championship. I was undefeated in 5A competition. I led our team to a 3rd place finish at 5A State. I know I have a ways to go but I am really excited about tennis, my game, and my future.
I was recently named the USTA Kansas District Missouri Valley Player and Sportsman of the year 2017. This added to the three Sportsman pins a received at the MV Sweet Sixteens and the Sportsman's Award I received at MV Futures #3. Our team was also given the Sportsmans Award at South Zonals.
My sister, Emma 2017, plays golf at Oklahoma State University. My family and I are really excited for her.
Similar to my sister’s golf structure, we have been able to create an academy like atmosphere with the help of Wichita Country Club. My main coach is Rex Coad, but I spend lots of time hitting with Lucy Kovalova (played at Wichita State University) and in the past with Anna Riedmiller (playing at Denver University). Like my sister, I train with Bill O’Conner at APEX who has worked with many Division I athletes.
