Personal Statement

I have been playing hockey since I was three years old. It has been a thrilling and rewarding experience that I hope to pursue throughout my college years.

Ever since I was little, my coaches have commented upon how attentively I listen to the instructions given. I do my best to carry out directions carefully and with precision; I constantly strive to please my coaches and become better as a player. I am not afraid to push myself to maximum performance, and if I cannot perform a task instantaneously, I do not stop trying until I succeed.

Although I prefer defense, I am able to play offense if I am needed there. Throughout my entire career, I have played on boys' teams, using my less than average height to my advantage. My diminutive stature allows me to stride at a faster rate than others, as well as to throw off their center of gravity on contact. Playing with boys has contributed greatly to my tenacious manner of playing. I am not afraid of playing in the "dirty areas", and I will readily defend myself, the puck, and my teammates.

Passing is one of my strong suits. I try not to be a "puck hog", and I am constantly looking for open teammates who are more strategically positioned than I am. I limit the number of cross-ice passes that I make in the defensive zone. In the offensive zone, I consistently attempt to be in the best possible position to receive a pass. I am not one of the top goal-scorers on my team, nor do I have the most elaborate dekes, but I compensate for these facts by taking away opposing scoring chances, and by creating them for my teammates. I try to anticipate which direction the play will go, and plan my actions accordingly. Thus equipped, I can make the split-second decisions that are often necessary in hockey.

As far as academics, my GPA is 3.9 out of 4. I make consistent good grades a priority, and do my best to maintain a balance between my athletic commitments and my academic duties. I am open to just about any college location, and would prefer to eventually compete at the highest level possible. The quality of the education offered is also extremely pertinent.

I am a team player. I try to form strong relationships with my teammates throughout the season, and I always have their backs. While I maintain total focus on the ice, I believe that having fun with my teammates and really getting to know them will not only bring us closer as friends, but will also carry over to the ice. Finally, I endeavor to keep in mind that hockey is, after all, still a game.

By taking advantage of this extensive network, more than 92 percent of NCSA verified athletes play at the college level. The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
