My name is Chanelle Martinez, I’m a multi sport athlete and have been since the age of four, but basketball has always been my first love. I come from a basketball family, my grandfather, uncle and my sister all college basketball players. Both of my parents coached basketball for over 15 years. So it was natural for me to fall in love with the sport.
I have played on several teams, youth, travel, high school, and in 2016 I was chosen to compete with 10 of Alaska’s best 15-18 year old girls in the Arctic Winter Games, and went on to help our team win the gold.
My sophomore year I had a major setback, first game of the regular season I tore my ACL and Meniscus. Though I was devastated that I couldn’t play, as soon as I was able, I still attended every practice, and traveled with the team. My love for the game wouldn’t let me sit at home.
While recovering I managed the basketball team and become their statistician. I was able to learn more sitting on the sidelines about what the coaches were looking for from each player. I cheered my team on, and helped in every practice.
I worked hard to rehab my knee, and that summer was able to get back on the court. Two weeks later. I was having pain in my knee, and immediately had another surgery to scrap away built up scar tissue.
Again worked hard on rehabbing-my knee and 30 days later I was back on the court. With less than a month to my junior year high school basketball try outs. I was at the gym working on my game. Working to get my shot back.
My love for the game, my parents, coaches and team mates helped me get back on the court for tryouts. I pushed myself, and kept pushing. I successfully completed my high school season, though at a lower level than I wanted. My time on the Junior Varsity team, prepared me to be a leader and to have confidence in my game. I was able to help other girls on the team, by sharing those tips I learned on the bench the previous season. I never gave up, and continued to be a leader on and off the court. I maintained a 3.6 GPA and helped some of my teammates in their studies.
My junior year was my best year because I was able to get my speed, and my shot back. I continued to play basketball in spring leagues and worked out with trainers to ensure I stayed 100 percent. I played in several women’s leagues over the summer and ran track on the Varsity team.
I just completed Varsity flag football season where I was named 1st team defensive player and second team wide receiver. My basketball season just started, I’m pleased that my hard work over the summer aided me in getting a starting position on the Varsity basketball team. I will continue to grow throughout this year, as we go for a second state title.
I believe I have something to bring to a team, as a shooting guard and more importantly I’m ready to be pushed. I would like to grow under experienced coaches while playing basketball at the next level.
I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to read my personal statement, and best wishes on your upcoming basketball season.
