Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Ian Healey. I am 5ft. 8in. tall and weigh 140 lbs. My best time in the 40-yard dash is in between 4.6 and 4.7 seconds. I also run the 100-meter dash for my school on the track team and have a best time of 11.7 seconds. I have great agility and am able to change directions very quickly, especially in pursuit of a soccer ball. My ability to read the game of soccer and my vision of where the ball needs to go are excellent. The ability to be able to see 3 or 4 plays ahead of what's happening on the field is a huge advantage to me as I can work the ball around knowing what should come next. I am the smartest soccer player on the field for my high school team with the experience to know what to do in difficult situations. I do not buckle under pressure in tight circumstances and I??m very able to work my way out of traffic with the ball. I have tremendous foot skills and have a sticky touch on the ball where it is very difficult to take it off my foot. When I started playing soccer in 1st grade I was a goalie. I feel that starting off playing goalie developed my vision on the field where I was able to see everything at once from the goalie position. Now being a midfielder/forward, the vision has stuck with me and is a great advantage to any team. I am a very athletic and technically coordinated person as I also run varsity track and wrestle for the varsity team in addition to my main sport, soccer. I am a very strong 140 lbs. as I was able to raise my max bench press to 185 lbs. during last years wrestling season. I do not let anyone push me off the ball and I have an inner competitive nature to never give up and to go hard every minute of every game, no matter if we're winning by 10 goals or losing by 10 goals. One of the most important aspects of my game is that I am a team player. I never put anyone down and I am a leader out on the pitch. Always using constructive criticism, I raise the game of my teammates and put forth every effort to help them, and myself, play to the best of our possible abilities. It has always been my dream to play soccer at a higher and higher level whenever the opportunity arose. Having played club soccer at the premier level since second grade, I have had my fair share of competitive tournaments and games. I played club for Cleveland Soccer Academy for the past 10 years and have been involved in numerous State Cup tournaments as well as out of state tournaments in areas such as: Kentucky, Michigan, Virginia, North Carolina, and Indiana. Ever since I was a little kid I always wanted to play professional soccer. Pele has been my "hero" or "idol" and I have always looked up to him the utmost respect. I am definitely not picky when it comes to where I want to play soccer. Of coarse playing somewhere out of the state I have grown up in would be a cool experience, but what really matters is finding a team that goes with the area of education I want to pursue. I am planning on majoring in either Sports Medicine/Athletic Training, or going into the Pre-med. field. The size of the school does not matter at all as long as I am studying what I want and am on a team that is competitive and works hard. The love I have for the game of soccer is beyond comparison to many other people. Being physically fit, and athletically active is who I am, and what I want to do for the rest of my life. When it comes to be a time when I can no longer carry the physical load of athletics, I wish to transfer my knowledge and passion of the game onto others through medicine or athletic training. On the topic of my family, they have had financial difficulty for the past 10 years. Regardless of the financial state, my parents have sacrificed a lot to ensure that my soccer career would not suffer. My older sister is in her 4th and final year of college with FAFSA assistance. My athletic goals for college include: making a positive impact on a team as soon as possible, to play at a competitive level where soccer is taken very seriously and the team is always looking to improve and do great things, and for my individual game of soccer to grow and improve, as well as to become a leader on a team over my collegiate career.
