My name is Jonas O’Mara. I am currently a freshman at Keene High School, in Keene NH. As a student athlete, my goal is to play competitive soccer at a college or university with high academic expectations that offers strong programs in math and science. I want to be challenged physically and mentally during my college experience.
On the field I am very versatile and flexible player. I have played many positions in the past few years. On my club team (GPS NH NPL) I have played striker and outside back. For the Olympic Development Program, I was selected for the regional pool at center back while also playing striker. For my varsity team, I started at center attacking midfield, but occasionally I played striker. Even though I prefer playing midfield, I can step in to fill any role asked of me without complaint. I am also very coachable and willing to accept criticism. I respect my coaches, and I listen to their advice and use it to grow as a player.
Academically, I am a motivated and diligent student. I finished my first quarter of high school with a 3.96 GPA (4.21 weighted). In total I am taking 4 honors classes this year, and completed honors Geometry as an 8th grader. I have also won academic awards in the past, including the Scholar Athlete Award for my high school varsity team, the Corps of Discovery award at National History Day at the University of Maryland, and have competed in state math and geography contests.
One obstacle I have faced is the long drives to practices on weeknights. There are not many clubs in my area, so I have to travel fairly far to attend practice. Dedicating more 4-5 hours of my night between the drive and the practice has forced me to learn good time management skills, a trait I believe will serve me well for the rest of my life.
