I learned the most about myself when I suffered a series of injuries that sidelined me for large parts of my middle school years. Horsing around with friends in 6th grade, I fell off of a wall; breaking both my leg and my wrist. That left me in heel to hip and elbow to fingers casts on my left side, which limited my ability to do much all summer. I came out with poor fitness and found I had to work hard to regain my former abilities. But I ended up having a school-record-breaking 45 goal 7th grade season. A year later, I was three games into my 8th grade season, in the best fitness of my life, and scored 16 goals in those games. Three doctors later, I figured out my back was broken and had to leave my season there: put into a back brace that I would wear for 23 hours/day for the next three months. I was devastated, but I continued to show up and cheer the team on; even when it killed me to watch them playing without me.
Repeated setbacks during my seventh and eighth grades showed me that there is no quit in me. I believe in leading my team by example with my work ethic. And I’ve found that being a leader sometimes means just doing what needs to be done; whether it be on the field or in the classroom. I believe in being a cerebral player with strong field vision, and I am looking for a program that will challenge me academically as well as athletically. I listen to my coaches, I work hard, and I know I will be an asset to whatever team I end up on.
