Personal Statement - Who Am I
In life we are usually defined by what other people say about us. Most of the time that is the only way others can see who you are without even getting to know the real you. During my junior year of high school, I was named the starting quarterback for the varsity team and we were having a really great season. But after a 6-0 start, I ended up breaking my ankle and having to sit out for the rest of the year. It absolutely killed me inside and I basically had to start over again with everything. After surgery and healing, I had to learn how to walk again, to run, to lift weights, and to be a happy teenager. It was heartbreaking and hard for me to get back to the young man that I was. I found myself depressed and down a lot as about being incapable of doing normal human tasks. My coach knew this so he connected me with a former alum, now in college, who had gone through the same devastating experience. He helped me to broaden my vision so that I could see that there was more to this year and I needed to focus on working hard to come back even stronger for my senior year. I starting working my butt off for the next football season: running track for the first time to increase my speed and agility, dropping basketball and baseball to focus on football, and pushing my mind and body to new heights.
When my senior year of football came along, I was named captain of the team. Our offense was the highest scoring in conference. I passed for 1500 yards and threw 18 touchdowns with only 6 interceptions. I was also the second leading rusher with over 400 yards and 8 rushing touchdowns. Being 6’3” and 225 lbs definitely helped! Our team ended the regular season 7-2 but we lost in the first round of the playoffs in overtime by a field goal. It was disappointing as I learned not everything in life works the way you want. Still, I appreciate the talents I have been blessed with as well as the opportunity to play football with my friends for multiple years.
Not only was it a successful year on the field but I also did well in the classroom, particularly in my leadership classes. What we do in the class is mentor freshmen and help them find their way through high school. I was a student mentor last year and now I am the teacher assistant in the class. I help the mentors with problems that they may face and figure out how to attack them in the right way. I am in another leadership group called Next Up, where we work with incoming freshman athletes to become leaders themselves and spread a more positive attitude throughout the school. I like giving back to the school that has given me so much.
What I am is a student athlete who plans to go to college and get a degree in sports radio and broadcasting. All my life I’ve never been afraid to go up in front of people and talk and give presentations and I have fun doing it. So when you add sports into it, it makes the perfect career choice for me. I plan to play football at the next level and not just play it but succeed and excel. It is something that I know won’t be easy, but I’ve gone through harder things in my life and come out on top, so I’m willing to put in the work for this.
So, when you look at me, I don’t want you to just see a quarterback and great athlete. I want you to see a normal kid who is multidimensional and not a dumb jock; someone who has gone through many ups and downs in his life and has still made it, who is trying to figure out what it means to be him and how to make it in a world that does not make it easy for him to succeed. I am a kid who is ready for a new start and a new him outside of the town he has lived in his entire life. Jeremy Hunt is ready to show himself and others that there is more to him than people may think.Statistic | 2017 Varsity Team |
