Personal Statement

I desire to attend a college or university where I can make an immediate positive difference academically, athletically and within the greater student leadership.  Fortunately, for me, my parents have served me as fantastic role models of self-actualization, social responsibility, optimism, self-regard and empathy.  These traits within myself have afforded me the honor of being either selected by my school's faculty or elected by my peers to serve on school leadership forums ranging from a position as a Rotarian Liaison, a member of World of Difference, All-School Leadership Team, serve as only student on the search committee for a new athletic director and many others.

Academically, I am an honor student and newly appointed member of the National Honor Society (NHS) whose work ethic allows me to perform well.  I truly enjoy school and embrace all that it has to offer.  I do struggle at times with my math coursework and work diligently with my teachers during and after school to clarify that which I do not understand.

I am fortunate that I have been invited to participate in regional showcases, summer clubs and other off-season teams.  More often than not I have to decline as we, as a family, have decided to spend our summers together traveling to unique places or to extended family events.   My parents due in large part to their professions (1herosports.com and leading challenges.com) are able to coordinate incredible summer family adventures for my brother and me.  When I am home during the summer I work at a local women's clothier, have a standing child-care job with a local family and spend time outdoors as my home town is a recreation destination.

This past summer I completed a 23-day leadership course in the Colorado Rockies as part of a 12 person Outward Bound team.  As one of three women on the team I learned the importance of assertiveness and empathy as well as perseverance (I broke my wrist during week two) as I completed a nine mile run as part of my course completion.  During a three day solo where the combination of isolation, limited food and water served as an opportunity for massive self-reflection, I questioned my self-regard and recommitted to myself that I will continue to lead when others would rather follow and follow when my following is needed.

Prior to attending this course I represented my school as a member of the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leader Forum (HOBY).  Only two sophomores per school are invited to attend.  The week long leader training focused on service above self in an effort to improve the human condition; I loved every minute of this program and look forward to using these skills as I lead on the field and in the classroom..  Student leadership is important to me and I have been a part of it since 6th grade.   last year I was part of a search committee to select a new high school principal.  It was a fascinating process and I look forward to working with him soon.

I am a renaissance athlete committing myself to three unique teams at my school.  I am the only student-athlete in my grade (2019) who earned three varsity letters as a freshman and as a sophomore.   During my freshman year my family and I lived in Australia for four months where rugby, field hockey, lacrosse and scuba diving were part of my after school activities.

I am built for sports.   I love being part of a team, leading when appropriate (I aspire to be a three sport captain), doing the grunt work that makes no highlight reel nor news paper clipping (we have a hometown news paper).  Participating in three sports offers me so much in the way of emotional, physical and social development.  Having new teammates to work with each season is a gift and affords me the opportunity to extend and stretch my academic and social networks.

I have much to offer a college/university.  By the end of this year I will have traveled to all seven continents (thanks to my parents), will have lived in two continents and will have served on mission projects in Uganda (three weeks) and Nicaragua (both during summers; 8th grade and 10th grade respectively).

I have witnessed first hand many social problems, political problems and environmental problems I now want to study and learn solutions to them.  I am passionate about the world's oceans and have scuba dived in most of them.  Marine biology is a deep academic and social interest of mine I am so passionate about theses issue that I volunteered and paid my way to canvass on behalf of Secretary Clinton for a week in Philadelphia; what an experience.

I see myself contributing to a competitive program where I will make a positive difference immediately on the field, in the classroom and within the dorm.   I appreciate your interest in me and look forward to meeting you in person.

With optimism,
