Volleyball has been my rock during the past four years. I have learned that I have a strength of emotional leadership and the ability to adapt and push through difficult times. My life has experienced many challenges where learning your inner strength has been important. Most students think of their sport as a place to have fun, work hard, relieve stress and hopefully obtain their goal of playing in college. However, I learned much more. During my freshman year, my parents went through a difficult divorce. I believe there always is a silver lining and found the positive side of that situation was the connection of closeness I obtained with my twin brother. Later in that year, my older half- brother passed away suddenly. I try to use that experience as a reminder to work towards your goals as you never know when life will throw you a wild card. Those two experiences caused me to dig deep into my ability to push forward and stay positive. Unfortunately that was not the worst. As I am about to enter my senior year, I have had to watch 3 fellow players pass away who were part of my high school volleyball teams.
As an individual, I have taken their deaths and remind myself every day that I am lucky enough to still be here. My strength comes from hard aches and the power to continue forward for all my friends who no longer are able. Although the playing and desire to win is always the highlight of a sport, it does not compare to the ability to be the leader who brings the team together. The life skill that I have acquired is to remain calm in difficult situations, such as serving critical points to win a match.
If after reading this introduction you ask why Courtney Whited for your college volleyball team; the answer is simple, I am your positive, emotional leader for your team. I look forward to speaking with you about your opportunities to continue my volleyball and academic careers.
