Personal Statement

Passion, commitment and drive are the 3 things that motivate me to do things. I am very passionate about how I perform in school, volleyball, and hula.  These are the 3 things that are very important to me, and the 3 things, besides my family, that motivate me to work hard and do well. Volleyball is not just a sport to me. It is something that has helped me learn about who I am, who I want to become and also taught me a lot of life skills.  I've learned that if I want to do well in something, I need to work hard. I am very committed to always working my hardest in the classroom and on the court.  I strive to be the best student-athlete that I can be.  I set goals for myself and I try my best to accomplish them.  For example, during the 1st semester of high school, I didn't do as well as I wanted to academically in my classes.  I expect myself to perform at my best and try my best at all times.  It was my first year at a private high school.  Coming to a private high school from a public intermediate school was tough, tougher than I thought it was going to be. After the 1st semester, I set a goal for myself to get straight A's, get involved in school activities and work harder in volleyball.  I knew I could do it, and I knew it was going to be a lot of hard work, but I was committed to achieving my goal. I finished my 9th grade school year with straight A's. I am going to continue to work hard in the classroom and on the court. I hope to have more opportunities to travel with my club volleyball team to compete in tournaments. Now that my junior year of high school is done, I am focused on making myself stronger, faster and consistent. I have been doing morning workouts in the weight room 3 times a week and doing cardio work 2 days a week. My goal is to make the starting line-up my senior year on the varsity volleyball team. I am someone who does not give up. I know that I will continue to face challenges and adversities, but my motto is "undeniable", be the best person that I can be, do the best that I can in my studies and in volleyball so that I will be a positive contributor to my team and my community.

  • 3 day volleyball camp with former UH volleyball players and siblings, Josh and Sarah Mason. Makenna received the Most Positive Team Attitude award. All-American Volleyball Academy Coaches Comments: Technical Skills Serving - Stay aggressive you got a great serve! Srv. Receive - Read the ball sooner and get feet there first Setting - Nice hands, work on location. Attacking - Stay behind the ball and work on court vision hitting your shots consistently Blocking - Work on feet to ball first. BR Defense - Stay aggressive and dont take yourself out of the play by thinking “I cant”. Coaches Feedback: Coach General Comments Coach Sarah I loved your positive attitude and team encouragement. You have a great presence and ability to bring people up or down, so stay focused on the positive. Continue to work hard on the small things technically and you will be a great all around player! Coach Josh Makenna, you have a powerful presence on the court. It was clear from the outset that the other girls respected you and looked to you for leadership. You are a great all-around player, and I know you will push yourself to continue to grow technically. However, your greatest opportunities to grow as a player lie in your role as a leader. Challenge yourself this year to go out of your way to challenge and encourage your team mates, and be even louder in your on and off the court communication in a positive, humble demeanor.
