As I think about my dreams, goals and aspirations, this quote comes to mind: “But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing and need not hope for anything.”
Continuing my education to obtain a degree in Psychology and play volleyball at the same time involves me taking a huge risk. Leaving home, making new friends learning and meeting new expectations seems scary. However, I feel my experiences in the classroom and on the volleyball court have prepared me to deal with new and challenging situations.
Education has always been my first priority. I have been fortunate to have parents, teachers and coaches who have supported my academic goals. Having parents whose careers involve helping people, I experienced first hand how helping others can be deeply satisfying and rewarding. Furthermore, my goal to help others and get into law enforcement or legal work.
Volleyball is part of my everyday life. Both of my parents coach at the club and high school levels. My brother played at the collegiate division one level. Volleyball has taught me to be prepared, embrace new challenges, and knowing that I gave all that I could is most important. In addition to this, having physical and mental toughness is vital to overcoming any challenge. The game has allowed me to visit over 15 States. One dream of mine is to continue to travel and have new experiences within the United States and even worldwide.
Besides volleyball, I have participated in other sports including soccer, basketball, gymnastics and canoe paddling. The main value I learned from these sports was how to help others. These other team sports allowed me to learn how to support my team. My value as a team member increased as I accepted this role. Wherever my dreams and aspirations take me, I want to be a positive member of my community.
Education is a priority. Volleyball is a passion. Given the opportunity to do both in college would be a dream come true.
