My name is Hannah Torres- as you can see from my profile. I have been playing volleyball for about 3 years now. When I was in 7th grade, there were tryouts for the volleyball team that my only friends were going to. My mother strongly encouraged me to try something new and to put myself out there to make more friends. On a whim, I decided that I wanted to try out. I had literally never touched a volleyball before the tryouts, and I was absolutely terrible compared to the other girls around me. Every time the ball would come near me, it would skyrocket in some unknown direction. I ended up making the team somehow. I'm pretty sure I only made the team because I've always been extremely tall for my age. My coach for that season was Coach Ashley who happened to be the daughter of the owner of my current travel team. So from school, I got recruited to my travel team and met Coach Cooper who was both the owner of Twisters and my coach. He has been a huge part of my life because he has given me so many opportunities with volleyball that most likely wouldn't have happened if I didn't decide to play for travel. Now, I could go on and on about Cooper, but for your sake of finding out more about me, I'll move on.
Since starting high school, I've really been thinking about the direction I want my life to go in. I've started to think of some 5 year goals for myself. Most of them are very independent because I like to make sure I really earn things and they aren't just handed to me. My first goal is that I want to get all of my required classes out of the way for universities so that I can graduate early. Yes, a lot of people like to walk at graduation with their friends and have the big ceremony (don't get me wrong, I'd like to too), but I personally think that it is a bigger accomplishment to get all of my education early and be ahead of the game. My second goal is to have a job by the time I'm 16 years old so that I can save up in preparation for college. I know this goal should be the first on my list, but I believe that getting my education is top priority. My next goal is to get into a top university with a volleyball scholarship. This would be really amazing for me because it has always been a huge dream for me to get a scholarship for college. Overall, I want to hustle as much as I can to get my priorities done and my goals reached.
Now that volleyball has become such a big part of my life, it has become a dream of mine to play professional volleyball. I think it would be a really fun learning experience for me. Personally, I would like to play professionally for 5-10 years. If I don't go pro or after I go professional, I would like to become a middle school teacher somewhere near Ventura, CA.
I'm a great candidate for coaches because I am very coachable as far as learning new techniques and skills. I also get along with just about everybody, so all teammates are a match for me. Middle blocking is my primary position and my specialty because I'm tall, but I can play any position on the court with a little practice. As far as getting the grades to play in college, that will be no problem at all because my usual GPA is about a 3.5. I am a visual learner, so if I see a video of someone playing volleyball and they have a technique that I think will help me, or if my coach shows me something to do, I will try my best to apply it to my playing.
