Amanda Melian '16 Recruiting Profile

My name is Amanda Melian I am 5'2"  and i weigh 115 pounds. I am currently a senior in Susan E. Wagner High School in Staten Island, NY. This is my fourth year competing in Cross Country and Track and Field. I would love the chance to be able to compete at a collegiate level. Cross Country is the season where not only does it matter about individual but it matters mostly about team work. Team work is very important to me, i love supporting others and not only doing work outs to benefit only me but also working out with others to help them also advance so that we can come back as a powerhouse. My character is really strong in caring and getting along with others. I love being positive and i believe that mentality plays a big part in a team structure. I'm looking for a team that has dedication, the right mentality and competitiveness that i can help contribute to. I can say I have improved a lot from my first year of Cross Country to my last year of Cross Country. Starting out freshman year i ran my first 5k in 27:37, currently i run my fastest 5k in 20:42. My favorite events are 2,000m Steeplechase, 1500m and of course the longest event in high school, 3000m. In high school they don't have a 3,000m steeplechase event, but i think that running the 3000m and 2000m steeplechase race gets me a step closer to feeling how it would feel to run a 3000m steeplechase race. I enjoy running steeplechase because i love the thrill of jumping over the hurdle and not knowing where your going to land but trusting yourself and believing in the program. Some of my high school highlights are winning the 1st place Sophomore Borough Champion title individually,qualifying as a team for New York State Federation meet and qualifying several times individually to compete at City Championship for steeplechase. This year I have set goals for both Cross Country and Track and Field. My Cross Country goal is being able to qualify for New York State Federation, hopefully by team but if i do qualify individually i think that would be a great confidence booster. Track and Field my main goal for steeplechase is to finish in a 7:20 because hitting that time means I would qualify to race at Nationals. I am undecided with my major but I'm interested in English and or Criminal Justice. As a child and now a teenager i always had a passion for reading and writing. As i get older watching all these shows about investigating crimes and problem solving has really caught my attention and i can see myself following one or both passions because I am very curious about those topics.
