MaryEllen Spika '11 Recruiting Profile

I am a 5'7, 110lb distance runner from Ottawa, Illinois. I won our sectional titles in the 3200m and 1600m in May, 2010. I ran both events in the Illinois High School State Track Meet in May, 2010. I have ran cross country all four years in high school. I have been voted captain for sophomore, junior and senior year. I was MVP 2 years. I was a sectional qualifier. I've been running distance since fifth grade, as well as playing travel and high school softball. My passion for distance running took over last year, as I gave up softball to run distance in track. Qualifying for state in two events my first year of track was a great accomplishment for me. I have the same coach for cross country and track. I'm told I am a great leader because I am able to bring my teammates together to build a cohevsive team. I am excited to continue my distance running in collegiate track. Size is not factor in my selection of a school, as I am comfortable in any environment and adapat to change very well. I would like to attend school in Illinois or Colorado, since I have family in Colorado and have visited there many times. Although, I would consider any other states as well. It is important to me that the school's chemistry program be ACS accredited, as I am strongly considering majoring in chemistry or biochemistry. My goal for running in college is to be a strong, competitive team memeber. I am easily coachable and realize I have much more to learn about running. I believe in leading by example and am eager to continue my distance running, leadership, and academics at a school that gives me that opportunity.
