Roberta Scantlebury '13 Recruiting Profile

As a tennis player/athlete, I want to continue to enhance my craft. My first introduction to the game was watching my sister. She is older than I am and there is usually an element of rivalry between siblings. Although this can be harmless, it can provoke competition. Time after time watching her play fueled my interest in the game. She was very good with little effort and even though I wanted to be better, I was hesitant to try. Interestingly enough, as my sister lost the desire to play tennis at around seventeen, my desire became stronger at the age of twelve. I started playing tennis competitively in my freshman year in high school. Being on the tennis team at school has helped me to hone my skills as a tennis player. I have learned that I am very strong individual both physically and mentally; and, playing competitively has increased my endurance on the court. Over the past three and one half years of playing on the team, I have not only enjoyed being a team player but I was made captain for the 2012-2013 seasons and I was voted MVP 2012. My sports goal is to continue to play tennis in college and to further improve my skills as a tennis player. I want to be the best tennis player that I can possibly. As far as life goals, I want to be a Civil Engineer. I am interested in civil engineering because of my grandfather who is a retired civil engineer. As I watched him work on various projects as I was growing up, my interest in the field was stimulated. I also found there was a lot of mathematics involved in this field of work. Coincidentally, math is my strongest subject and I also have a passion for it. Seeing him complete projects and observing as they came to life, made we want to follow in his footsteps. Having my own Civil Engineering business is something I dream of after I graduate college, with a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering. I am very outgoing and personable. I am also a good listener, a good communicator, and I also work well with others. These characteristics, with a bit of luck, will help me achieve my non-sports goals. My biggest goal is to achieve my 10 year plan, which is to have my own Civil Engineering Company.
