I was three years old, and I was drowning. Water and panic surrounded me. Luckily, my grandfather noticed that I had jumped off the safe step of the hot tub and it took mere seconds for him to rescue me. I was safe, but that helpless feeling stayed with me. Water terrified me. I was reluctant to get back in the water. Concerned for my safety, my mom enrolled me in swim lessons. Seven years later, I had not only overcome my fear of the water but realized that I enjoyed swimming. I decided to try out for the Tooele Swim Club, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. Now, I swim for the Stansbury High School varsity team and the senior division of the Pirate Swim Club where I continue to develop my love for swimming every day.
Swimming on competitive teams over the past five years has transformed me. I developed responsibility, gained self-esteem, formed amazing friendships, and learned more about myself. On top of swimming, I play water polo, keep a minimum of a 3.8 GPA, take all the possible honors courses from my high school, actively participate in my church’s youth group, and babysit occasionally for neighbors. After graduating high school, I plan to continue onto college and graduate with at least a bachelor’s degree. I would like to use my knowledge and experience to work as either a high school or club swim coach and help kids continue to grow and develop a love for swimming.
