Growing up in a small town outside of Scranton, Pennsylvania, my gym was nearby in Dunmore. For 12 years of gymnastics, 8 of them competitive, I was coached by a 1980 Olympian as well as a former Ecuadorian National and South American champion, who both pushed me to be my best at every practice, meet, and showcase. In turn, I began pushing myself in all other aspects of my life. In gymnastics and now into my hockey career, self-motivation has been my key to my success so far.
My interest in hockey began in my freshman year of high school while attending my first Wilkes/Barre Scranton Penguins game. After learning the fundamentals of the game, the goaltender’s role stood out to me the most. At the time, I was a competitive gymnast training approximately sixteen to twenty hours a week. Despite having had a lifelong passion for gymnastics, a fascination with the idea of becoming a goaltender quickly grew. I began studying the technical aspects of the position. I started practicing and the adrenaline I experienced while protecting the net was when my mind was settled. As much as I enjoyed my gymnastics lifestyle, balancing the two as well as school grew increasingly difficult. I made the decision to focus on my hockey career.
Many years of gymnastics taught me the discipline necessary to be successful and has also instilled a work-ethic that was, and still is, a foundation to my success. I have a grounded understanding of what it takes to be a serious athlete. All of these characteristics support my transition into goaltending.
My academic goals for high school include finishing my senior year remaining in the National Honor Society as well as ranking in the top five for my class. As for college, My intentions are to study psychology and to play collegiate hockey.
I recognize I started goaltending later than most and that I am on a much steeper learning curve. Skating, positioning, and different save techniques had to be learned within a short amount of time. I earned an opportunity for a varsity start in my rookie season. Being only 5'3", I’ve had to lean more heavily on my athletic background to overcome my height.
My strength and flexibility give me a strong advantage in movement. I have a focused mindset in net as well as the ability to handle high-pressure situations. I am constantly challenging myself to achieve new goals which will help me attain the next level of my goaltending career.
