Personal Statement

This year I achieved a long time goal of playing for a national championship with my club hockey team.  While we did not win, it did teach me that being a leader on the team is as important as winning.   As an assistant captain, I had to keep the team focused and motivated while reminding the team to take it one shift at a time.  I showed my teammates that sportsmanship is just as important as winning.

I started playing hockey when I was four years old. I was one of only a few girls in the entire youth hockey program. This motivated me to play harder, I didn't want to just keep up with the boys, I wanted to be better than the boys. This was also true for baseball, I played little league baseball for many years and again was one of only a few girls to play baseball instead of softball.  I may have started playing these sports because I wanted to be like my older brother but I quickly learned that I am naturally gifted athletically.  By combining my natural athleticism with the intensity needed to play with boys I found that I am happiest when I am part of a team working together to achieve a common goal.

Five years ago my parents approached me about moving to an all girls hockey team.  I was dead set against it. I loved my teammates and wanted to continue playing with the boys.  After a lot of thought and many discussions I agreed to give it a try.  This was the second best decision that I ever made (going to a prep school was the first.)

I have always aspired to play hockey at the collegiate level.  Ideally, I would like to play Division 1 hockey.  I am respectful and highly coachable. I am alway looking to improve and take feedback well. I work hard on and off the ice, I've learned through many years of highly competitive sports that there is always a girl trying to take my place!

I'm compassionate and enjoy doing community service.  For many years I was founding and active member of a neighborhood food drive called Healthy Bones. We collected food donations the first Saturday of every month for 13 years.

I study hard for the grades that I have. I seek help when needed and do whatever it takes to get good grades. My academic goal is to take honor and AP courses over the next few years.

Whether on the ice, the field, or in the classroom, I'm determined and never give up all the while being kind and supportive of my teammates and peers.
