Morgan McPhatter '20 Recruiting Profile

    My mom would take me to the driving range with her when I was about 10. She bought me some clubs and I would hit balls next to her. She noticed that I had a ‘very natural’ swing and encouraged me to take a few lessons. My first lessons were in a group setting at the driving range. I did this type of lesson for almost 2 years. Then, we found my current coach at a local golf course and I started taking lessons there. I would go out 2 times a week and over the summer, I would go 3 times a week. I was enjoying it.

    As I progressed, I set a goal for myself to make the high school golf team. I started going to the course more often. I did not play a lot of 9 or 18 hole games, except when I would go with my mom. I practiced a lot the summer before 9th grade and made the team. My first high school match was the first time I played competitively. I did not play my best due to my nerves but I did realize I was better than the girls I was paired with. I became even more motivated to practice and improve. Over the course of my first season, I improved a lot. I finished with a 51 average on the season, but I knew I could have done better. On the off season, I have continued to go to the course and practice with my coach every opportunity I get. I plan to play in Peggy Kirk tournaments in my area starting this Spring to gain experience in competitive play.

    My new goal is to play golf in college. I received the most improved award for my team as a freshman. I plan to work hard to be my high school’s number one player as a sophomore and make regionals. I push myself and always give my all. I have self motivated myself with encouragement from my parents. To get where I am today, I have driven myself all the way. I set goals and work hard to reach them.

    Academically, I want to maintain a high GPA so that it along with my golf game, I can get into a great school. In the classroom, I push myself constantly to get the highest grades I can. I expect a lot out of myself in school and on the course.

    My strength in golf is my short game. I have really developed my chipping ability. My coach always tells me that your short game is where it counts. I am consistently driving the ball off the tee about 200 yards and have been working in the offseason to improve my distance and accuracy.
