My name is Carolyn Almeida and I am a Junior at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, CA. I want to play golf on a collegiate level to continue to build a game that I am passionate for.
I started playing golf only three and half years ago, the summer before my freshman year, to make the Oak Ridge Girls Golf Team. Prior to that I played competative tennis since I was 10. With a summer of hard work I made the team at the number 4 spot on varsity. Freshman Year I averaged 51.3 and won 'Most Likely to Improve' and 'Most Inspirational' awards along with my Varsity Letter.
That summer I played in four First Tee tournaments and practiced for the season. Since I don't come from a 'golf' family, as we all played tennis it took me a while to figure out the 'golf world.' I didn't not know many girl golfers that played and didn't know what tournaments to play in. That summer I immersed myself into the golf world and started understanding it. My Sophomore season rolled around and I made the number 2 spot on Varsity and Captain. That year I averaged a 45.6 and won 'MVP' and 'Most Inspirational' awards.
That winter my coach had a connection with Serrano Country Club and tried to get me to play there. After collecting three letters of recommendation, passing through the General Manager's and the Board's approval, I was granted a year of playing privileges and use of the work out facilities at Serrano Country Club. I practiced every day I could and played whenever possible. After starting from no handicap in the end of 2012, in a year of hard work I have worked it down to (lowest of 4.6) a 5.
The 2013 summer I volunteered a total of 80 hours at the Serrano Golf and Tennis Camps. And played in 19 tournaments: 2 AJGA, 3 JGANC, and 14 First Tee. My Junior season began August 2013 and I had the number 1 spot and was Captain. I averaged a 40.7 and I lead my team the farthest it had been in the last three years, with myself being the oldest on the team. I was awarded with 'MVP.'
I have worked extremely hard in the past three years to get better at something I am passionate for. I aspire to become a better golf and by doing that become a better person. I love teaching others about the game of golf and supporting my team. My dream in to play collegiate golf to make my college experience the best it could possibly be.
