Personal Statement
Hello! My name is Alex Hillyer. I am currently 6'3" and weigh 180 pounds. Currently, I am working on improving speed and strength. My freshman year I was 6'1" and 130 pounds. Through two years of intense training I gained 50 pounds in muscle. As a freshman I made varsity and received Honorable Mention All-Conference. I did not start my freshman year, but was the first player in and got a lot of playing time. My sophomore year, as a starter for varsity, I received First Team All-Conference, First Team All-District, PrepCast award, and MVP of the Kennedy Christmas tournament. As junior, I was Conference Player of the Year, two time Prepcast Player of the game, Post Dispatch Athlete of the Week, and All Tournament Team of the Lindbergh Tournament. Also in my junior year I scored my 1000th point. I also play competitive basketball with St. Louis Team Adidas. We compete in big tournaments such as ADIDAS CUP, ADIDAS National, Music City Madness, and ADIDAS Hoosier Hardwood Championship. I have played on this team since freshman year and have started all 3 years. As a player both on and off the floor I feel like I provide leadership, enthusiasm, and motivation. To me being a leader doesnt just mean to be the best player on the team or the player who scores the most points. To me a leader is someone who keeps the team together and positively progresses every day both on and off the floor. When a whole group of incoming freshman come to their first practice I make it my goal to meet them and start to get to know them. Even though the teams are divided up into varsity, junior varsity, and freshman, all together we are Eureka basketball. I also feel like as a player I bring enthusiasm. I am not afraid to be a little crazy and show that I care about the game and about people. Both on and off the floor Im loud and encouraging. Finally, I provide motivation to hopefully everyone on my team. When given optional open gyms, not only am I always there, I make an attempt to get everyone there. I love tough games. I excel when it gets difficult and I love helping my team move through the game. I stay calm and never, ever give up. As far as college, I am looking at and considering everything. As of right now I am leaning towards staying kind of close to home (within 8 hours), but if I find the right school, I am also willing to travel farther away. I am also considering both small schools, big schools, and all divisions of athletics. Although my ultimate dream is to play Division I basketball, I will be open to looking at every option. When looking at schools I will definitely be considering education and majors offered. I want to play extremely competitive basketball, but when it comes down to it education has to be a priority. I am considering a major in Elementary Education or Nursing. When I come to the team as a freshman and then all the way through college, I want to bring something unique to the team, work harder than everyone, and continue the passion I have for basketball. I know this game and want to learn more. I like high expectations, and I have high expectations of myself. A team could always count on me to bring my best and encourage the best of them.
