My name is Maddy Greeling and I am 16 years old. I live and go to school in a rural farm community in Illinois. I have been playing basketball since I was four years old. When there wasn't any camps for girls my age, my parents enrolled me in area leagues and camps for boys. Where most players stress about bringing the ball down the floor, it's what makes me the most comfortable on the court. For my tenth birthday, of all the things I could have asked for I told my parents I wanted new basketball nets for the school playground across the street where I practiced everyday. I have always loved basketball.
I started playing on an organized team when I was nine years old. I have played AAU ball for the last five years both out of St. Louis, MO and Springfield, IL. I now play for Coach Tony Condra on Team St. Louis with other athletes from the metro St. Louis area. In middle school, I led my team to a second place title at the Illinois State Tournament (4A). During both middle school and high school, I have led my team in every statistical category. I have been on every tournament team I have ever participated in and was All Conference (first team) as a freshman, sophomore and junior. I was also named as small school player of the year for my freshman, sophomore and junior years. I was an honorable mention All-Sate as a freshman, Third Team IBCA All-State as a sophomore and received AP All-State Second Team honors and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association First Team honors as a junior. I am currently in my senior season and just recently reached 2,000 career points. I hope to continue reaching more of my personal goals in basketball this post season.
I like to be challenged both on and off the court and am very competitive in everything I do. I take all honors courses in high school and currently maintain a 3.9 GPA. I was once told by one of my coaches that I am "the closest thing to having a coach on the floor because I can see the whole court". Of all of my attributes, being able to "see the court and my teammates" is in my opinion my best quality as a player and makes me different from most other athletes and point guards. I enjoy scoring and finding opportunities to score, but I know that just as important is setting up my teammates to do the same. My ultimate goal and aspiration is to one day play in an NCAA tournament and eventually find a career that I love as much as the game itself.
As for my character, I have been raised in a family where honesty, hard work and respect are the foundation of everything we do. I am very close with my family and know at the end of the day no matter what happens on the court, if I play hard, if I am respectful to the coaches, officials and the other team, they are proud of me. I practice as hard as I play and I am my own worst critic. I do not know if I am different, better or have more skill than every other player, but I do know that I am most at home on the court and feel happiest when I have a basketball in my hands.
