At the beginning of my sophomore year, I tried out for the varsity basketball team and was not selected. Devastated by the results, I vowed to never give up and always work hard for anything that I want. Each day I went to the gym, working even harder than ever before. I began by improving my mental state of mind and found myself a personal trainer. With improved thinking, I realized that I could not let my failure negatively affect me because I would be unable to grow as a basketball player and student. Also, my personal trainer helped me to develop new skills and a different way of analyzing the plays of the game. Not only did I become more motivated, but I also gained more knowledge about my personal learning styles and strategies for playing basketball. During the later half of the season, I was promoted from the junior varsity to the varsity basketball team.
I learned from my experience to have a greater appreciation for things that do not come easy. Having a strong work ethic has helped me to persevere through challenges and not concern myself with things that may come easier for others. Taking the necessary steps to improve my attitude and skill sets landed me on the varsity basketball team my junior and senior year. Due to this experience, academically I have become more focused and competitive in all my academic subjects. My determination to be successful and strong work ethic in both academics and sports makes me a good candidate for any team.
