McKenzie Cheyenne Dickson
2021 High School Graduate
At the young age of 7 years old I started my softball career with our local Dixie Softball League and my obsession has continued to grow ever since. The same time the very next year, 8 years old, I competed in my first State Championship series and won. After winning state our team went on to the World Series that year in South Carolina. Through hard work and determination my team and I ending up coming out on top and were 10U World Champions. I helped my team reach this honor as the catcher that season. This accomplishment did nothing but increase my love for the game.
My next new experience with softball came when Coach Andy Lane contacted my parents and invited me to play for his travel ball team, Extreme. I completed one season with this team as catcher and most infield positions. I started taking private catching lessons and continued those for 1 year. I enjoyed my time with this team, but needed a more competitive environment. From Extreme I went on to play with Glory Adkins under Coach Hollingsworth. I played 2nd Base and Outfield for Coach Hollingsworth. Our team participated in a VTD National Qualifier during my season with them. At this time softball was beginning to become my way of life and not just a hobby.
Coach Snodgrass was my next coach with Texas Glory. I competed with my team as an Outfielder, primarily Center and some Right. At this point in my career I started receiving private batting lessons to extend my knowledge and improve my skill level. My first season with Coach Snodgrass’ team we qualified for the ASA Nationals in California 12U. The very next year we qualified and won the VTD Southern Nationals 14U. The weekend after Nationals, in preparation for the PGF Nationals in California, we picked up with some girls from our team and another and competed in the USSSA Nationals 14U and placed 3rd. Playing in California for the second time in my career was a great honor. It was a very competitive tournament and even though we did not place I could not have been prouder of my team and coaches.
After returning from California, fall of 2016, I started entering college show case camps/tournaments all of which have been 18U. I received an invite from The Softball Factory to come try out in the DFW area. After completing the tryout, I was invited to be a part of their National Team and come to Florida in December for a week-long camp. This was a great experience and I made some lifelong friends. From being invited to the event in Florida I have now been selected to play for The Softball Factory All American Team 14U at the Atlanta Legacy Showcase in Atlanta, Georgia in Summer of 2017. I am looking forward to this amazing opportunity to showcase my abilities and spunky personality to the coaches who will be in attendance.
It may not seem like it, but I do have some time for other activities outside of softball. I enjoy basketball, which I have participated in since I was 3 years old. I was a part of a select travel team for three years. I ended up having to pull back on my time on the court when softball became something that I competed in year-round. I have played on the A-team for my school’s basketball team during my 7th and 8th grade seasons. I have also been an active member, since the 7th grade, of the Track & Cross Country team at my school. For 2 years, 7th & 8th grade, I tried my hand at volleyball. I guess you could say that I enjoy most sporting activities. Along with sports my other passion is participating in band. I
have been playing percussion since the 6th grade and was moved up from beginner level to the highest level in my grade within a few weeks. At the end of my 7th grade year I was offered a spot in the High School marching band. I unfortunately had to turn down the opportunity because I was going in California competing in the PGF during the start of marching practice. With all my activities, I am an A&B Honor Roll student at North Lamar Middle School. I had the opportunity to be an office assistant this year also and have thoroughly enjoyed that experience.
As I start high school, I will be taking Pre-Ap classes in math and business related courses in preparation of attending college and receiving a Business Management or Marketing Degree. I also have my hopes set on playing varsity softball in high school and growing my skills. My dream is to play softball in college and receive my Business Degree then start a career and one day own my own business.
When I am not on the field or at school I attend Lamar Avenue Church of Christ in Paris, TX. I am a part of a very close family and enjoy spending time with my siblings and cousins as much as I can. I have a 3-month-old nephew who is the best and I am completely wrapped around his finger. We enjoy Sunday dinner at my Grandmother’s every weekend we are in town. It is a great time to be able to relax and catch up with everyone.
This year I have help with the assistant coaching and played for my local Dixie Softball League. This has been a great opportunity to get in some extra practice and conditioning in. I took advantage of the situation and I have been playing different positions that I don’t normally play during travel ball season. In doing this it has really grown my leadership skills and has been an absolute blast. My confidence has grown tremendously, which in turn has made my overall performance improve.
I love the busy life that I lead and none it would be possible without the help of my wonderful support group/family. My parents are always there pushing me and getting me to all my activities. I eat, sleep and breathe softball, but also enjoy being a young adult and living life.
