Personal Statement

I want to be a collegiate athlete to represent my family. My dad (Kalamazoo College) and grandpa (Central Michigan University) were both football players at the collegiate level so if the opportunity to carry on that tradition became available, I would be truly honored and humbled to do so. In addition, I want to play collegiate softball because the feeling of being a part of an elite team would fulfill the hunger that’s been in my stomach for many years. Also, I want to be a collegiate pitcher because I like to be in control of the game. Even before I started pitching, I wanted to have the ball in my hand and pitch and that’s how I got started with pitching.

My attitude and effort plays a big role in my leadership. I pride myself on having the best attitude and effort that I can have every workout, practice and game. I believe that negativity is spread more easily than positivity in your mind; when you have one person on your team that is always negative, then that player is undoing the work of the others. That’s how I try to be a good leader. If you were to ask my coach and teammates, they would say that I am the leader of the team. When the atmosphere isn’t positive, my team looks to me to see how I’m handling the situation. If I’m not happy and wearing a grim face, then that’s the kind of attitude that they would leave the dugout with when we take the field: grim and not confident in themselves. However, if I have a positive attitude and think that we can win, then all the girls on the team feed off that and believe in themselves. I lead through my actions.

If I get the honor to play softball at the collegiate level, I would expect a coach that would push me for the right reasons, such as helping me develop further my mental approach to the game and to help me be the best athlete and person I can be. The perfect coach for me would not only train me to become the best athlete I can be, but that coach would train me to be a good student and person and they would provide me direction and insight that I can use for life. The perfect school for me doesn’t have to have the richest success in softball but I do want to go to a school that is rich in hard work that has a good attitude and effort, and one that has a positive environment.
