Hi! My name is Abbey Jacobsen and I am a member of the Class of 2018. I am just finishing my summer season as the starting catcher for the 18u Barrington Hurricanes.
During my sophomore year in high school, I was a starting catcher on Varsity. I have been playing softball since I was 6 years old, starting in full time travel at age 9. I feel that I am a versatile player with a high level of "softball smarts." I am a student of the game and am very good at anticipating situations and knowing how to react. During my first year in travel, I was the starting short stop. I filled in as catcher due to an injury and have been loving it behind the plate ever since. In the past 2 years, at the Varsity and 18u levels, I have also played innings at 1st and 3rd base, but the majority of my time has been as the team's catcher.
The opportunity to catch has helped my development as a leader. I feel that I have always been a leader, but I was once quiet and lead only by example. Now, I have gained the confidence to lead more vocally, gaining the respect of both coaches and teammates.
I am a very hard worker, and that is seen both on and off the field. Academically, I have a cumulative GPA of 4.1 while taking a mix of classes, including Honors and AP. In college, I hope to study kinesiology, biology or another sports science that would feed into a graduate degree in Athletic Training. I am a compassionate person that likes to work with others. I feel those skills will help make me successful in that field of study.
I have had additional opportunities to work with others: Hands of Hope (partnering with schools in Africa), Autism Ambassadors (awareness and fundraising), and I have volunteered at Barrington Giving Day (helping those less fortunate in the community). I am also active in my church's youth group.
Most recently, I have been working as a softball coach at a local instructional facility. I have been mentoring young girls by running a camp and working hitting clinics. My hope is to help them with their skills as well as to spread my love for the game.
My goal is to play softball in college. I look forward to that experience not only helping my continued development athletically, but also continuing to support my growth in the areas of team work, leadership and the ability to help others.
