I am a Senior at Steele Canyon High School. I am 6'3 and weigh 185 lbs. My goals and aspirations include playing water polo while in college and being able to get a degree in kinesiology. My desire is to be able to use my degree to help others obtain their physical and mental health goals.
This is my second year playing with San Diego Shores during the off season. I am currently on the 18's A team and have played the winter and spring sessions. I plan to join the summer session and play at the Junior Olympics in July 2013. Our club team just recently took 1st place in the Kap 7 tournament.
My high school team went to CIF, but lost in the first round against La Costa Canyon. Our team is very young in its experience, but was able to keep the score tied until the 4th quarter. As the captain I was able to reach one of my goals which is being able to encourage players to put forth their best effort during practices, and especially in times of real seriousness such as pre-game warm-ups and games.
Sophomore year in swimming I was able to swim my 50 free in 24 seconds and my 100 free in 54. I feel I have improved on my swimming ability and am confident that my times have improved too. I do this by going to our local gym (at minimum) four times a week to swim and lift weights.
Last year (2011) my team went to CIF, but unfortunately lost in the first round against the 5th seeded team. During that game I was forced to step up my game and really challenge myself to become a stronger leader in the pool and out. I was the top scorer for my team last year with 58 goals and received the County Honorable Mention award and MVP award.
In hindsight, I must admit that my freshman and sophomore year of high school I slacked off academically and wasn't focused about college or post high school education. But, since the beginning of my Junior year I have been trying to turn that around and improve my grades. Although I began off to a slow start I'm very serious about going to a University after high school and playing water polo in college. I'm unsure of which college I'm interested in because of the fact I have not done enough research.
Therefore, I am certainly open to different types of schools that will help me reach my goals. My plan is to be able to raise my GPA to a 3.0 or better and make it on a University team. This will enable me show that I can make a positive impact as part of the team. Even if I don't get the opportunity to be a starter or play much freshman year, my goal is to be able to play more each year while showing you, through my hard work and effort, that I want more playing time, and want to become a starter.
This past season I played in two tournaments with my club team within a 2 month period of time and the first tournament I scored four goals. In the second tournament I scored five goals to help my team win first place in our division.
I recognize you have the opportunity to look at many players for this sport, and greatly appreciate your time in viewing mine.
Gratefully,
Austin Wing
