In honesty, I had never seen myself as a collegiate runner –or as a runner at all– until this year. I had played soccer all my life for fun and basketball was the reason I kept in shape. I always knew I was athletic, and those two aforementioned sports were the activities that captured the interests of most of us in our rural Vermont setting. In my high school the Cross-Country and Track Coach was a big personality and a great science teacher who attracted many students who didn’t see themselves as runners. Watching my identical twin brother emerge as one of the top freshman runners in the state, I found myself drawn to Coach John Kerrigan’s team to see how running cross-country might increase my fitness for basketball season. But a great coach can make all the difference in a kid’s life. Little did I know that my fitness and commitment as an athlete would enable me to develop into one of the top sophomores in the state within one season. As a varsity cross-country runner, I helped Harwood Union to a Division II state title and ran in the New England Championships.. Following my first season as a varsity basketball player, I rejoined the running community for the spring track season led by Coach Kerrigan and was again pleased that through my hard efforts I earned a 3rd and 4th place finish in the 1500m and 800m at the state meet. Throughout this past year Coach Kerrigan helped me identify that this sport, to which I was so new, was better suited to my athletic skills and held greater promise for a future as a collegiate athlete.
I want to be clear that I have always taken my studies very seriously and am proud of my success in the classroom, holding academics paramount. As a sophomore, I took the PSATs and earned scores higher than 99 percent of sophomores in Critical Reading and higher than 98 percent for Mathematics and Writing Skills. Throughout my first two years of high school, I have sought out the most challenging course load, resulting in a weighted 4.25 GPA.
I am eager to combine the life of a student-athlete with a stimulating undergraduate liberal arts curriculum. My hope is to again work with a coach who will help me develop as an athlete and mature as an honorable man.
