UPDATES: 2013 (high school) track season: I hold the #1 top time in my state in the 1500m (4:04.35) and the 800m (1:53.00). At the state championships I won the 800m and achieved a new PR of 1:53.00, and in my (ILH) conference championships, where I won both the 1500 and 800. In the 1500, I got a new PR of 4:04.35 and broke the conference meet record by over 4 seconds. At the Mt. Sac Relays (in California) a few days before that, I just got a new PR of 1:55.51 in the 800m. As my goals for my final high school track season were to further improve my times and win my events in both my conference and state championships, I achieved all the goals I set for myself this season.
I enjoy competing in track because it gives me confidence and a sense of accomplishment, which also has carried over to other areas of my life. As a competitive athlete, I know that if I train hard and race smart, I can get faster and stronger and do well in my races. I believe I can help the team by being a competitive runner that can perform well in important races. I believe I have a good work ethic and work hard in practice. I try to help others on my team have confidence and train well. I strive to reach the goals my coaches and I have set for myself. I have a desire to compete in track & field in college. My best event is the 800m, but I think with more practice and race experience I can be more competitive in the 400m and 1500m as well.
I have been running, mostly in summer track clubs, since I was 11 yrs old, but didnt begin training seriously until the summer before 9th grade. That summer my top 800m time was 2:14. The following summer before my sophomore year I ran 2:02 at the 2010 Jr. Olympics, then 1:57.57 at the 2011 Junior Olympics (July 2011), where I placed 2nd in the finals. I also placed 3rd in my state championships in the 800m sophomore year (May 2011). My junior year I ran my PR of 1:56.08 at the Arcadia Invitational in April 2012. I also competed in the Mt. Sac Relays 2 weeks later with a time of 1:57. In May 2012 I placed 2nd in the 800m at the Hawaii State Track & Field Championships. I also competed in the 800m National Jr. Olympics Championships in Baltimore, Maryland (July 26), however, I did not have a good race. Although I did not make the finals, I am thankful for the opportunity to run against top competion in my age group.
As a senior finishing my final high school XC season, my best time of the season and current PR of 16:58.30 was set at the Honolulu Marathon Invitational where I placed 10th. (1:35 faster than last year on the same course.) In my conference championships I was in 5th place, and had my 2nd fastest time of the season at 16:59. At the state championships, I was 10th, which was a significant improvement from my 58th place finish my junior year. I also made ILH 1st team XC All-Star.
As my goal for XC was to place in the top 5 in my conference championships, make the top 20 at State Championships and run 16:30 or faster by the end of this XC season, I was able to reach or exceed 2 out of my 3 goals for my final high school XC season.
I will continue to work on getting faster in all of my events, and plan to compete in some 5k road races and all comers track meets before high school track season begins. I believe after my successful xc season, I will be stronger going into my final high school track season, where I hope in improve my times in the 400, 800, 1500 and 3,000m.
