For as long as I can remember, I have always been in motion: running, thinking, climbing, achieving. There were some who painted my odds of success at thin to unlikely. But the drive inside of me, the desire to persevere kept my legs turning for extra yards. Running will always be my escape. It allows me to break away from life’s restraints. It allows me to continually test and redefine my limits.
I ask myself where my journey will lead and often reflect upon the experiences and learning I might encounter along the way. I aspire to find a fulfilling career. One that will take full advantage of my strengths and provide stability for my loved ones and me. I expect to graduate from college with newfound skills and knowledge to help guide me closer to my goals.
Reaching these goals will be no easy task. In order to be a successful runner, you have to have the tools and foundation on which to build on. As a student, I have worked hard to establish a solid academic foundation. I have received the Golden Pyramid Award for three consecutive years, received honor roll recognition my sophomore year, made UT All Academic Team (football & track), and maintained a 3.6 grade point average throughout high school.
In addition, I was part of the Black Student Union, won district air bands, and received numerous athletic accolades including: All-League Track, CIF Track, and Pre-Season All East County Football. However, my most meaningful recognition came from my family and mentors. When I felt overwhelmed, tired, frustrated, or lost, they were there (like a second wind), to guide, inspire, and rejuvenate. I appreciate those who made (and continue to make) a difference in my life. One day, when I am in position, I hope to do the same.
It has been stated that one should not place too much emphasis on the final destination. It is equally important to enjoy and appreciate the journey. I am excited by the opportunity to meet new people and build meaningful relationships. Like a serene view moving past me during a warm, evening run, I hope to enjoy the details of life and growth. While my mind and heart remain fixed on the finish line, my legs will continue to move through (and around) obstacles.
