I started running in middle school, but I did not become serious about it until I realized my potential and found my passion for the sport in high school. I am fortunate enough to have participated in Loyola’s strong track program these past 4 years, granting me the opportunity to foster my abilities and become a team captain. I originally started as sprinter, running the 100m, 200m, 4x100m, and 4x400m. Although I still run some of those events, I wanted to branch out and try new ones. Interested in hurdles, I decided to try the event my sophomore year, and I found a hidden talent as I won the frosh/soph 300m hurdles final at Mission League Finals that same year. I also placed 3rd in both the 110m and 300m hurdles this past year at league, and I am expected to win both events this year and make a strong run in CIF. This year I am also going to long jump as well since I jumped 19 ft 7 ¾ in for my first and only jump last year as an unrecorded jumper.
As one of the leaders for our 200+ member team, my leadership skills have strongly developed as I set the example for the younger guys. My discipline and work ethic have also improved because of my drive to break the school’s 300m hurdle record and reach the state meet in June. By running, I have learned that I am open to growth because of my coachable attitude and willingness to receive criticism to improve myself. Also, my interest in many events demonstrate this because I enjoy trying new events, hoping to help the team in any way possible and possibly becoming a decathlete in college. I know that these skills will allow me to succeed and provide a strong impact on a college team. My time management skills and responsibility have also developed because of my need to balance school and track. As a student athlete, I highly value academics and put my education first. I am in the Cum Laude Society as I am in the top 10% of my class. I hope to finish with a cumulative 4.5 GPA, and I plan on continuing my academic achievement in college. In college, I want to major in neuroscience because of my interest in understanding the different brain processes and everything about the conscience, in the hope of becoming a neurosurgeon.
