My name is Miguel R Aguiar V. I was given this name as part of a long tradition and family heritage on my father's side. I come from a very large extended family on both my mother and father's sides. I prefer the nickname "Mikey" and identify with this name because I feel a sense of the name being my own. I grew up with the name and my family and friends all use this name. I am very proud of belonging to my family and have learned valuable life skills and lessons from having so many people in my life.
My life is not so different from others, but unique in ways. I grew up a fairly normal childhood, living in the east bay area, and having experienced living in Rohnert Park (Sonoma County), Chico (Butte County), and several years in Brentwood (Contra Costa County). I adjusted well to the many different environments and make friends easily, keeping the friends that I have known for years. I had a brief period in my life when I had to adapt to my mother and father's divorce in my sophomore and junior year, however, I stayed true to myself and have maintained my character and drive as a student and athlete. My experiences have given me strength and I am thankful for so much.
Academically, I was an above average student and took pride in my work. I enjoyed school and loved to be first, do well in all subjects, and was honor roll throughout middle school and into my Sophomore year. My teacher's would speak highly of me and I know the importance of continuing my education, as learning is lifelong.
From a very young age, I was on the go. I loved to run and was full of energy. It was inevitable that I would find sports, and my parents directing me toward athletics. I love the game, whatever it is. I love the physical challenges and being challenged. I am a good student of the game and have been told I am coachable. I played baseball, basketball, football, run track and play soccer. As I matured and began to show a passion for soccer, I personally chose to focus on soccer and then came back to track in high school. I have played soccer since age 5 and stepped away from baseball at age 12 to play competitive soccer. The demands of soccer were high, but baseball remains a sport I enjoy. I ran track in middle school and participated in the Eddie Hart Foundation, running at a Hershey's State Meet at age 12, placing fourth in the mile (5:17). My soccer accomplishments were many and I am thankful that I was able to compete with a very talented group of soccer players, and winning numerous tournaments and league championships. I am thankful for having a coach who dedicated so much to out development and exposure to Premier and Gold levels of competition. I played goalie for several years, defender, and as I became more technical, I was utilized as wing and midfield. I have strength in my left foot that allows me as a right footed person to play the ball into the box. I have assisted numerous times in goals scored with this ability. I have an innate ability to track the ball and am fearless on the field. As I developed into a strong middle defender, I became a leader on the field and co-captain of my competitive team defense. As a 16 year old and my early 17 year old seasons, I was called up to play U18 Premier. I started as a left defender and competed well. Being 5'11" and 170 pounds, with speed, I able to compete at the higher aged group levels.
I competed in 7th and 8th grade in Track, but did not do so freshman/ sophomore years. My junior year I decided to get back into the sport and enjoyed much success. I excelled in the 400 meter, 4x400 Relay and Split Medley, 100m and 200 meter relay. My personal best in the 400m was attained in Fresno at the West Coast Relays (49.28), and 400m split as anchor and third leg (48.50, 48.30, 48.60) at Sacramento Meet of Champions,North Coast Sectional finals and Championship at UC Berkeley. I hold two school records and share the 4x400 Relay and 4x100 Relay records with my team, and 4x400 split time. I continue to strive for new personal records at every event this year.
My weakness is one that I know I need to work on. I am not very flexible at all and know I need help with becoming more flexible. Stretching and getting loose is never a problem, however, improving in this area will only improve my abilities as an athlete and my long term physical health.
I dream of playing college sports and have worked hard to continue to improve in soccer and track. I have a strong work ethic and believe in playing hard and practicing harder. I do not have a preference as to where I attend college, and am willing to consider any opportunity. I have lived in the Northern California region for all of my life and have traveled all over the state of California, Nevada, Idaho, and am willing to consider going beyond the westcoast for the opportunity to attend college.
My educational goals are still undecided. However, I enjoy biological sciences. I know that once I begin to explore more of the opportunities and career fields, I will choose a major and concentrate on that goal.
As a student athlete, I strive to do my best. I desire to compete at the highest level of collegiate sports and contribute to the team's success, and college or universities success. I understand the bigger picture of life, academically and athletically, and realize I gain as much personally as I do being part of the success of those around me.
