My name is Matthew James Sanford. I was selected to join my high school's varsity team as a freshman and have played as a starter ever since. I recently completed my sophomore year as my team's offensive MVP, and on the All State First Team. I feel my contributions helped my team to reach second place in our division. My coach said that the reason I was chosen as MVP was that I not only was a high scorer, I also led the team in assists. Although I am an attack, I am a team player and am always looking for the opportunities to score in every game. I finished the season with 56 points - an even split of 28 goals and 28 assists. My coach also talked about the fact that I eat, breathe, and sleep lacrosse, and always have. Even when the season is over I am always playing, practicing, and researching ways to improve my game.
I feel that I could bring many things to a college team, including leadership, hard work, and I will do everything in my power to guarantee a victory. Although all of these are important I also feel like I have a lot to offer in the important field of academics. I averaged between and 3.9 and 4.0 GPA both years of high school, and will always strive to maintain the highest GPA possible.
I would love to attend college in the east due to the fact that I love and follow many of the teams, and have spent all of my life here. The type of school I would prefer is one with high academic standards. I feel that academic must always be looked upon first, but college lacrosse is my dream, whether it is D1, D2, or D3.
Some athletic goals I have set are to be an All American two years out of the four I am competing in the High School varsity level. My first goal was to make it on the varsity squad as a freshman and score more then 20 goals, which was achieved last year. This year my goals were to help my team win our division championship and to make All State. We tried our hardest to win the championship, and came very close at second place. I am so happy and proud to have achieved All State as a sophomore, and to have earned the MVP award as well. I feel this displays the drive that I have to get something done if I have my heart set on it. The next goal I have set is to earn some type of scholarship, either in academics or in athletics. I will work my hardest to achieve all these goals and plan to excel in everything I can to capture them.
