What makes me stand out from other athletes is I realize that as a student athlete you need Healthy Athletic Performance, Leadership, and Community Service. A healthy athletic performance to me Is to leave everything on the field. Do not hold grudges against an opponent. However, the most important aspect is to remember your roots. Why are you playing this sport? For me it's simple. I love the game of lacrosse. Every time I hear the word lacrosse I get a smile on my face. Every ground ball, every dodge, every hit, and every check gets my heart pumping and wanting more. For the love of the game.
Leadership to me means to take a risk. As a team captain of my Lacrosse club, I often am placed in situations where I have to have a good head on my shoulders. When teammates get in a scuffle amongst themselves at practice or with an opponent at a game, I must be the one to step up and suppress the situation. Off the field, friends, family and teammates have to know I am there for them. This means being a reliable source for them to turn to for guidance or just an open ear. The importance is to know a person's situation and to be able to be there for that person and "step in their shoes."
Another form of leadership to me is rising through adversity. During my first season as a lacrosse player my Sophomore season, my lacrosse club went 0-9. I trained all off-season going to every camp I could. I continuously watched film of college and even high school lacrosse. The next season for my Junior year (2012-2013) I was named team captain. I tried to teach the new comers of the team what I had learned from my previous experience of failing. That season Desert Valley Lacrosse went 9-6 and went we went to our first playoff game in 4 seasons. The difference between the 2011-2012 team and the 2012-2013 team was the closeness as a unit we developed. We always wanted more as a team, and for that, we were rewarded.
For Community Service I was apart of my Varsity Football team at Shadow Hills High school. Each week coaches would choose 7 individual players to participate in the Special Education Big Brother program. This program was every Friday at lunch. The seven football players would have fun and accompany the "special teammates" as we called them. I was honored to take part in this twice during the season and I learned a lot about being grateful for many of the blessings in my life. I also learned great patience and bonded with a broader diversity which I can see making me a better person in life experiences.
