Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Andy Grayson and my goal is to attend a college which has strong academics and a golf program that I can be a part of. I currently attend Highland High School in Medina, Ohio and I will graduate in 2015. I have been a member of the varsity golf team since my freshman year. I have learned many lessons each season the golf team as well as from competing in tournaments outside my high school schedule.  The experience I have acquired has helped me strengthen my game greatly each year.  My improvement has shown that with dedication and the right coaching I can continue to develop as a complete player and continue to lower my scores.

I began playing golf when I was about 8 but I didn't play competitive golf until the summer before my freshmen year of high school. Although I didn't make the Varsity team immediately out of tryouts, I was not discouraged and continued to work hard until I earned an chance to play Varsity and I held my spot for the rest of the year. In my sophomore year I improved a lot, dropping my average below my best score from the year before. I earned an Honorable mention all league award for my efforts. In the winter following the season, I began to take lessons at GolfTec, my first formal lessons. As a result my average dropped by several more strokes and earned first team all league honors. As a team, we were able to qualify for districts for the 2nd time in my 3 years on varsity. At districts, we struggled as a team but I recorded the lowest score on the team and earned Honorable Mention All District Honors.

Academically, I look to push myself with advanced classes. I attend a school that encourages students to take challenging course work and gives students the tools they need to succeed in these difficult classes. I have taken many AP and Honors classes which require hard work to succeed. Throughout high school I have maintained a GPA of 4.2 on a weighted scale.

In addition to golf I also play Varsity baseball and summer baseball for the Ohio Scrappers.  Playing two sports has been challenging but I have become a better golfer because of it.  As a pitcher I learned how to help the team in games where we don't play our best not only by pitching my best but also by leading with a positive attitude and strong presence on the mound.  Pitching also helped me learn how to handle pressure as an individual and how to stay focused on my goals when things I can't control don't go my way.

I believe I still have a lot of room to improve my game and I am willing to work hard to be the best player that I can. I have not been able to place 100% effort behind golf because I split time in the summer between golf and baseball. If I put all my focus into golf I would improve a lot quicker and become a more consistent golfer overall.

  • 7/19/14 to 7/20/14
  • 79-77 Hit the ball really well over both days but was a little bit too cautious on the greens. I hadn't played on these types of greens in competition before but by the second round i had begun to figure them out. Got a little bit of bad weather on the back nine of the second round but was able to finish off the round fairly well after the weather improved, 14 pars, 1 birdie.
  • Camp/Event
  • Good Park Junior Tournament
  • 7/09/14 to 7/11/14
  • 83(qualifying round)-69-78. First Day of tournament determined placement into one of 8 flights. Poor play on first day placed me in the fourth flight. Improved my tee shots over the next two days and was able to hit the ball really well both days. Putting was much worse on the last day which accounted for almost the entire stroke difference between round 2 and 3. Shot the lowest score for anyone in the non championship flights, which played a different set of tees.
  • Camp/Event
  • Hurricane Junior Golf Tour- College Prep Series at Penn State
  • 6/14/14 to 6/15/14
  • 81-76 Was not sharp with almost everything on day 1. Improved a lot on day 2 and started off very well, shooting even on the front. was too cautious on the back but finished strong on 18 and gave myself a 15 foot eagle putt, which was 2 putted for birdie.
  • Camp/Event
  • Hurricane Junior Golf TOur - College Prep Series at Kent State
  • 5/24/14 to 5/26/14
  • 82-78-78 Didn't play my best on the first day. Improved a lot over the next two days and was playing very well on the 3rd day. Struggled on the last few holes every day which made my score a lot higher than it should have been.
  • Camp/Event
  • Hurricane Junior Golf Tour - Toledo Jr Shootout
  • 4/26/14 to 4/27/14
  • 79-75 Played fairly well both days in very windy conditions. Solid contact and low, strong ball flight kept the wind from push shots too far offline. Misplayed a few shots but recovered well afterwards. Finished T4, 3 shots behind the winner.
  • Camp/Event
  • Hurricane Junior Golf Tour -Cleveland Jr Shootout
  • 4/19/14 to 4/20/14
  • 79-82 First tournament of the year. Played better in the second round but a couple mental mistakes on the back nine made my score inflate.
  • Camp/Event
  • Medina County Varsity Tournament
  • 73 - Medalist. Birdied the first play-off hole to win after tying for low round in the tournament.
