Hello, my name is Andy Grayson and my goal is to attend a college which has strong academics and a golf program that I can be a part of. I currently attend Highland High School in Medina, Ohio and I will graduate in 2015. I have been a member of the varsity golf team since my freshman year. I have learned many lessons each season the golf team as well as from competing in tournaments outside my high school schedule. The experience I have acquired has helped me strengthen my game greatly each year. My improvement has shown that with dedication and the right coaching I can continue to develop as a complete player and continue to lower my scores.
I began playing golf when I was about 8 but I didn't play competitive golf until the summer before my freshmen year of high school. Although I didn't make the Varsity team immediately out of tryouts, I was not discouraged and continued to work hard until I earned an chance to play Varsity and I held my spot for the rest of the year. In my sophomore year I improved a lot, dropping my average below my best score from the year before. I earned an Honorable mention all league award for my efforts. In the winter following the season, I began to take lessons at GolfTec, my first formal lessons. As a result my average dropped by several more strokes and earned first team all league honors. As a team, we were able to qualify for districts for the 2nd time in my 3 years on varsity. At districts, we struggled as a team but I recorded the lowest score on the team and earned Honorable Mention All District Honors.
Academically, I look to push myself with advanced classes. I attend a school that encourages students to take challenging course work and gives students the tools they need to succeed in these difficult classes. I have taken many AP and Honors classes which require hard work to succeed. Throughout high school I have maintained a GPA of 4.2 on a weighted scale.
In addition to golf I also play Varsity baseball and summer baseball for the Ohio Scrappers. Playing two sports has been challenging but I have become a better golfer because of it. As a pitcher I learned how to help the team in games where we don't play our best not only by pitching my best but also by leading with a positive attitude and strong presence on the mound. Pitching also helped me learn how to handle pressure as an individual and how to stay focused on my goals when things I can't control don't go my way.
I believe I still have a lot of room to improve my game and I am willing to work hard to be the best player that I can. I have not been able to place 100% effort behind golf because I split time in the summer between golf and baseball. If I put all my focus into golf I would improve a lot quicker and become a more consistent golfer overall.
