Hello, my name is Zach Jewell. I am approximately 6’3” and weigh about 190 pounds. Golf is a passion of mine, and I can’t get enough of it! This past golf season was very successful. I placed 1st
in the Junior Elks Club golf tournament at Madison Golf Course with a round of even par 69. I also played in the Peoria Men’s City golf tournament for the first time and won the “B” Flight division. The high school season soon followed, and I made the 1st team all-conference with a 4th place finish in the conference tournament. I then followed up with another 4th place finish in the Regional tournament, allowing me to advance to Sectionals.
I like to think of myself as being mentally tough when it comes to the game of golf. From the moment I step on the 1st tee until the ball rolls into the 18th hole, I am always calm. When in a high school match or tournament, I am usually the one offering words of positive encouragement and trying to keep
my team calm and confident. While playing in the Peoria Men’s City Tournament for the first time, I was awarded the Andy Paul Outstanding Junior Golfer Award. This award is given to a junior golfer who shows skill, compassion, and composure throughout the 6 day tournament. It is usually given to the top junior golfer in the Championship flight of the tournament, but this past year was an exception. Being the first junior to receive the award without playing in the Championship flight was a great honor.
This summer has been a very succsesful one. My biggest accomplishment was winning Player Of the Year for the Peoria area. In order to win this award I had to do well in 5 local tournaments. I never finished anything lower than 4th place in any one of the five and was able to bring home the trophy. I also played in a few Nike Junior Tour tournaments. I finished in 4th place at Decatur Country Club and won my most recent tournament which was at Ironwood Golf Club in Normal, Illinois. As a result of playing well this summer, I earned a spot on the Junior River Cup team. This is like a miniature version of the Ryder Cup for the Peoria area. I hope to continue to play well when my school season rolls around this fall.
When it comes to the location of schools, I would prefer to stay somewhere in the Midwest since my family is very supportive in everything I do. But, I would still consider schools outside of the Midwest if offered the opportunity to receive a higher level of education and play the game I love most. I have narrowed my career choices to either engineering, accounting or athletic training. Therefore, I wish to attend a school that offers one of these degrees. Since I do not have a preference of school size, I would love to visit the campuses of many schools in order to find the school that’s right for me.
Playing college golf has been my biggest dream since the first time I picked up a golf club in the 8th grade! I believe that I have improved at a very rapid pace and plan on getting even better this year. I am currently employed at a golf course and use it to my advantage by playing and practicing during every spare moment I get. I am willing to work hard, and do whatever it takes in order to play golf at the highest level. Achieving my goal of playing college golf would be a dream come true and I would cherish every second of it!
Thank you for your time. I look forward to communicating with you in the near future.
Sincerely,
Zach Jewell
