I’ve always found that playing a variety of sports, including basketball, football, and baseball, has provided balance in my life. While maintaining excellence in academics has been a priority, sports can strengthen both the body and mind, leading to improved performance in both areas. Athletics also teach valuable life lessons, including how to exhibit sportsmanship and camaraderie among your peers. But more importantly, sports give you the opportunity to develop fully as a multi-dimensional individual. Academics and sports have always seemed to me to be perfect complements to one another, as many times, physical limitations in a certain sport can be compensated with a thorough knowledge of how to play the game.
Among all sports, my favorite is basketball, primarily due to the mental aspect of the game. A great degree of mental toughness and a keen knowledge of the various strategies are required to compete successfully on the basketball court. While physical attributes are certainly beneficial in the game of basketball, they are not enough in themselves to make for a complete player, and this makes the game uniquely challenging.
Recently, I made the very difficult decision to transfer from North Sunflower Academy (NSA) to St. Joseph High School in Greenville, Miss. Although the decision to change schools for my senior year of high school was a difficult one, the move allowed me to take several AP and honors classes that were unavailable at NSA. In addition, St. Joe’s offered me the opportunity to be coached by Lee Hazelwood, one of the most highly regarded coaches in Mississippi, and to play in a tougher, more competitive public school league.
