From the outside looking in, I appear to be a normal, outgoing teenager that plays varsity basketball and football. However, no one can see the blood, sweat and tears, I put into my performance behind the scene. For example, an average day for me begins with an intense workout from 5:45 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. at Lifetime Fitness Gym. Following my workout, I head to school, at which time I channel all my energy and focus on my education. After school, I attend football practice Monday through Saturday, with games on Fridays. Additionally, three days out of the week I have basketball practice immediately following football. While I am passionate about, and very much dedicated to both sports, I am equally dedicated to my coursework. Thus, I have a strong ability to balance both sports and school. Consequently, while this may seem like a lifestyle to be desired by my peers, being a student and athlete is extremely challenging. Through it all, my drive, dedication and ambition stem from parents’ unconditional love and inspiration!
Although I lead a hectic lifestyle, I work hard at balancing my athletic, educational, and personal life. My journey towards success began at a young age, where as a child, I lived with my mother. She molded me with the quotes- “Never let them see you down. Smile on the outside and cry on the inside.” When I grew older, I moved in with my father who has ultimately taught me the importance of an education. I also praise him for shaping me into a well- rounded young man. Thus, from my mother’s strength and competiveness and my father’s perseverance, I have been taught the importance of hard work, success, and the need to remain grounded.
As we fast forward to the present day, with the life lessons from my mother and my father, I have two goals in sight; which is to play sports at the collegiate level and receive a quality college education. College has been an important achievement throughout my family’s history. Thus, being the next generation of the Lewis’ to go to college is not only a goal, but an absolute dream for me. As a college graduate, my father has continuously emphasized and exposed me to the importance of higher education and the opportunities that can follow. This is my ultimate reason for striving daily to be the best not only on the court and the field, but in the classroom as well. With this in mind, academics are a top priority and will ensure a bright and prosperous future for me.
Earning a scholarship to college is very important to me; as it will not only help me to successfully earn a college degree for also prepare me for my advancement into the next phase of my life. It will allow me to eventually, not only help my family financially, but also make my parents extremely proud.
Consequently, as I ponder on the question of what/who my greatest inspiration is, I would have to answer- my parents! They push me to be a better person than I could even imagine myself to be. They have instilled values in me that motivate me to be the best I can be. Making my parents proud drives me to do better each day. Through it all, my parents are my greatest inspiration. They have done an amazing job in raising me, teaching me to always strive to be the best, never settling for anything less. Without them, I am nobody!
