Personal Statement

My name is Charles Barsella and I attend St. Anthony's High School in South Huntington, New York.  My high school is one of the top schools in Long Island for academics and athletics, having an enrollment of 2,700 students, it's quite competitive.  I live 21 miles from my school, which means that I wake up at 5:00am to get to school on time.  During my years as a freshman, sophomore, and junior, my parents have without fail, taken me to the Mineola train station, two towns away, in order to catch the 6:29am train to Huntington, then catch a shuttle bus from the train to my St. Ant's.   For the return trip, one of my parents usually picks me up and drives me home.  During the regular season, we practice 5 days a week , 4 of which are 3:00pm-5:00pm, but on Wednesdays, practice begins later and finishes up at 8:30pm. I try to make it in early on Friday Mornings so that I can lift weights with my teammates.  My coaches have looked to me since my freshman year to lead my teammates by example and rally them to the weight room.  I make mention of this only because I want you to know that I'm no stranger to hard work, discipline and sacrifice.

I'm looking for a college/university that will challenge me academically because I know that a good education is very important. I also want to fulfill my football dreams and aspirations. As a freshman my average was only an 80. But, my last two years have yielded an 86 average.

One thing that I can promise you Coach, is that you can count on me to continue to work hard and achieve.

My core beliefs are listed below.

  1. To be an example, not just on the field but in the classroom and outside of school.
  2.  I know I must always be righteous in my actions, for those are a reflection of myself, my team, and my school.
  3. I will never get outworked! I understand that at the next level everybody has talent, but I believe that talent alone will not bring success - hard work is the key to success.
  4. You will never have to question my love for the game. Since freshman year I've played with a broken finger, torn tendons in my hand, a torn stomach muscle, and the regular expected football injuries from being in the trenches.
  5. I elevate my teammates' game play. When I step up, they rise with me!
  6. I don't train to just better myself. I train to also better my team.
  7. I am coach-able. I always wish to get better. I take criticism head on and make it a point to fix the problem right away. I have faith and trust in my coaches.
