When I was younger I struggled with anxiety and I was angry. I felt cheated that my parents had gotten a divorce and that my father had chosen alcohol over us. At times I almost felt crippled by my emotions. My mother had me start attending counseling at an early age and it was my counselor that suggested I try sports. I was very uncertain about playing but I now realize this was the best thing that ever happened to me. Every season that I play, I continue to grow not just as an athlete but as an individual.
I began playing football in 5th grade for a team that won one game during the season but I had a Coach that instilled the love of the game to us and I am now, as a Sophomore, the starting defensive end for the Bellevue West Thunderbirds. Last year, our team took state and this year we placed 5th in the state with only three losses in the last two years. Being a multi sport athlete, I have realized the sacrifices necessary to compete at a higher level.
Last year I was captain on our Freshman football team and was not a part of the Varsity team that took state. I believe as a student athlete that is probably when I grew the most. Although I have been captain multiple times this is when i truly understood that 100% was not enough. To beat out upper classmen athletes and not only play on Varsity but to start I would have to give everything to practicing and my academics. I believe it is this drive, talent , and love for the game that will allow me to compete at the college level and to make a positive impact on your team.
