My name is Joey Soberon and I am 15 years old. I am 5’11” and weigh 175 lbs. I just finished my Freshman year at Clayton Valley Charter High School. Academically I did very well finishing with straight A’s and a 4.17 GPA. I took AP Art History this year and I will be enrolled in AP Euro History for my Sophomore year. Next year I will also be in Honors Chemistry.
I pitched with our varsity team this winter and did well against the older competition. My coaches decided it would be best for me to play down on the Freshman team during the spring and take a leadership role. I started 8 games and finished with a 10-0 record, 48 strikeouts and a 1.16 ERA. This spring our entire program did very well, finishing with a 64-9 record throughout. The varsity club made it to the NCS semifinals for the first time in 6 years.
My summer is packed with baseball and training. I am playing with my school’s summer club which is coached by Bob Ralston, Casey Coakley, and Chris Snyder. Our coaches emphasize that the summer is a time to get better so I decided earlier this month that I would work to add velocity, master my slider and add the use of a sinker. Offensively I decided to work on my speed and to continue to learn more and more of the game.
Any day of the week, if I don’t have a game to play, I am training at my house, in the cage or in the gym. I throw my bullpens at Mike Murphy Baseball in Walnut Creek, CA. Coach Mike Murphy and Tom Rosemeyer have played a great part in my development these last two years and will continue to do so as long as I play the game. Another activity I have added to my routine this summer is tutoring. I tutor a student who is taking a summer geometry course at my local library twice a week.
My goal in High School is to graduate with straight A’s and a scholarship to a school where I can study Medicine or Law and play baseball at the same time. I am open to attending schools across the nation but I would like to attend an academically selective school. I would like to stay near a coast, but am willing to travel inland if that is where NCSA takes me. As far as I am concerned, the division level of a school will not immediately determine my decision.
