Personal Statement

I would like to play volleyball in college because, for one, I cannot imagine not playing volleyball, and two, I am still progressing as a player. With every season that I play I am still improving, and with the right coach and program to guide and push me, I think I can do great things. Please read my story below.
My volleyball career began during my freshman year of high school. After being cut from the 8th grade team, I figured I'd give high school ball a shot. The second day of try-outs, I was ready to give up, I didn't believe in myself and I didn't think I could do it. The coach called me on the last day of tryouts, saying I needed to come in right away, and I am so glad I did. I played on the junior varsity team and VPVA's 15's club team as a right side hitter that year.
Sophomore year, I returned to the high school junior varsity program again as a right side hitter. I was confident walking into VPVA's travel try-outs for the 16's team. Unfortunately, I was cut. I was devastated as this was the only team I had tried out for (looking back this was a huge mistake) and try outs were all over. Luckily, I had worked my way to a practice-only spot on the American Volleyball Club 16's team. This was huge for me. I realized my career wasn't over. I found ne strengths in my swing, and passing.
Junior year, I walked into varsity try-outs nervous. After so much work, dedication, and conditioning I found myself cut from the team. This was the hardest blow in my career. I was so devastated, I thought all the hard work for this sport I am in love with was for nothing. My mom then found a recreation team through NVVA during the fall. I signed up immediately, not knowing what the team or coaches would be like. Upon arrival to the first practice, I found I was one of three girls on the team that were looking for a higher level of play. Everyone else was at a beginner level. This allowed me to really focus on my skills in passing, serving, and I even was a setter. The coach for this team put me in middle hitter, for the first time ever. This was a hard change for me to get used to, but once I did I had touches on every ball. I played all the way around the court, and I even played setter for a couple games. As travel season rolled around, I was confident once again in my progress. I tried out for several club teams, and found my place as a middle/outside for Apple Valley Volleyball Club on their 17's black team. This is the greatest fit I could ask for. My coach is supportive and challenging, and he understands I want to play in college and that one of my goals is to go back to my high school team my senior year and show my high school coach what I've accomplished.
