My name is Samantha Sabater and I am from Virginia Beach, VA. I am a senior at Salem High School and will be graduating in 2017. I am 5 feet 2 inches tall and 150 pounds. My standing reach is 6’7” with my block jump at 9’ and my approach jump at 9’5”.
I started playing late in sixth grade and since then have played school volleyball. I began playing club volleyball in 9th grade. As one of the captains my senior year, my school team finished 2nd place in the conference, and made it to regional semi-finals. I was selected as a second team all-conference player. So far for my club team in my senior year, we are doing well staying in gold bracket competition. We took 2nd place at the Monument City tournament in Richmond, VA. We finished 3rd in gold at the Colonial Classic in Williamsburg, VA. Most recently, we won the gold medal and a bid to AAU Nationals at the AAU Grand Prix in Princess Anne, Maryland.
In a recent scholarship recommendation letter, my high school coach, Coach Kelly Mills wrote:
“An uncommon trait among teenagers is total goodness. As a teenager, Sammy makes good choices, which allows her to stay on-track with her schoolwork, volleyball, and other family responsibilities. Sammy is highly motivated to honor her family and do the right thing... even when nobody's watching. As a person of high character, she sees good in everybody. It is hard for her to say negative comments about anything because she is so loyal and positive about people. In addition, she faces life's challenges with a positive perspective of opportunity to gain knowledge,
As a four-year starter at Salem, she is well-liked and respected by her team-mates. Over the summers, she would create workouts for her team. Her leadership skills stood out among her team-mates because she knows how to motivate through encouragement and enlightenment rather than tearing people apart with negative reinforcement. She has always been a team player. Sammy has pushed herself so hard in volleyball that she can now play practically any position on the court. She was an All Conference - 2nd team standout who helped her team place 5th in the state her senior year (highest placement for Salem in 18 years). Sammy is a hard worker and I hope to see her continue to grow as a volleyball player in college. “
The extracurricular school activities I am involved in are Girl Scouts and Rhythm Project All-Stars steel drum band. I am in a steel drum band that competes in festivals that have international draw. During the summer, our “tour season,” we travel all over Hampton Roads and even out of state to perform at events from small parties to being the main event at some town events.
My intended major is in sports medicine, exercise science or kinesiology. My career goal is to be a pediatric sports physical therapist.
