My parents knew I was going to be some sort of athlete ever since I said the word "ball," as my first word. Turns out they were right as I debated whether my favorite sport was swimming, basketball, soccer, or volleyball. Being that I've put volleyball measurements, and not basketball measurements in my profile, I think it's safe to say that I chose volleyball. All you know right now is my physical attributes, but if you just give me 5 minutes of your time, I promise to show you that I am more than what is defined by these measurements.
Volleyball has always been something that I've never struggled to do. Yes I maintain A's and B's in school, but of course, it isn't easy. Throughout my childhood, I found it difficult to express myself using words, and tended to stay quiet in fear of being ridiculed. In sixth grade, I was introduced to volleyball, and from there my love for the game was immortal not only because of the sport itself, but the way it made open up and communicate with others. Since then I've played all throughout middle school and all throughout my high school career thus far, including 4 consecutive seasons of club ball.
My primary position is outside hitter, but my coaches have put me as middle hitter for the better of the team. I've played all front row positions, and am willing to play any position a coach decides to put me. Sophomore year, I was fortunate to receive the MVP award at 71st High School playing varsity. My junior year I transferred schools and was able to make varsity again. My current school team, coached by Moe Licardo, won the conference tournament for a second year in a row and to add to this victorious memory of this team, I was blessed to receive the MVP award and the 1st Team award as well.
Starting in 8th grade, I began to play club volleyball, and I can easily say it was one of the best decisions of my life. Without club volleyball, I don't think I would be as experienced and well versed in the world of volleyball. From 2013-2016, I have been chosen by my teammates as captain and I am forever thankful for that title they granted me with. Each year of club ball, our team was able to end he season with at least one medal from a tournament through heart and teamwork. Club volleyball has taught me numerous things about volleyball, and also life. I've come to realize that my time as a highschool athlete is not measured by how well I did in a game, or how hard I'm able to hit a ball, but rather the people and bonds I've created with my teammates, as well as there families.
I may not be at the top of my class, or have the perfect height, or the ideal vertical that you are looking for, but what I do have is heart. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to proceed my volleyball career. And honestly, I'm not ready to let go of the one thing that's held the key to my happiness all these years.
