An athlete: one who is proficient in sports and whom is skilled in competitive events.
Being a student athlete and one who strives to compete at the highest level is challenging. I, Jocelyn Mormann will begin my senior year at Westside High School, located in the heart of Omaha Nebraska. Westside is a nationally acclaimed public school district, and is one of the very best in the United States. I will begin my senior year focusing on my academics and athletic career. I am a strong student athlete who manages her time well in the classroom as well as in preparation to be ready on the court. To me being a student to fill academic and athletic roles is very important. I come from a family of four, my parents and my sister who also played college volleyball. I attended a Catholic School in elementary and later transferred to the Westside District. At the age of three I began to establish myself in the sport of figure skating. This journey continued for ten years where I competed locally and regionally. This sport taught me how to manage my time with schoolwork as well as striving for perfection. I would learn to never give up and always give more than 100%. After that long career I began to play volleyball and run track. I compete in both of these sports at Westside. I play club volleyball for Nebraska Elite Volleyball, and have played for them for five years, where we made it to Nationals in 2009. My academic career is very important to me. I was nominated as candidate for Rotary Honor Roll during junior high, only those chosen are provided the opportunity to apply during their senior year for this scholarship. I am a member of Spanish National Honors Society as well as National Honors Society. I believe a strong academic student makes for a valuable student athlete.
As my future lies ahead, I look forward to all of its opportunities. To attend college is an important step and one I have chosen to take. I find myself questioning what school will fit me best. At this time I have no definite region in mind but know I will need to be cognizant of what’s best for my family and me. I first look for the schools that have a strong Chemistry program that can get me to my degree. I am planning on majoring in Chemistry that provides the rigor to apply and be accepted into a Pharmacy school. At this time I attend a high school of over 2,000 students. I think I could handle any type of student body as long as I can still learn. I am open to many different types of schools. Currently, with the cost of tuition and the increase of out of state tuition, I will be in need of financial assistance.
I would like to find the school that fits my academic needs and if I can play volleyball that is a huge plus. I love the sport and would love to continue to play. I would like to play on a team where I can continue to grow as a player, contribute as a team member and strive to help a team perform to it's top potential. I also look forward to working for a coach that has a vision and understanding of what their program is and where they want it to be in the future. I can offer a team many different talents, being a leader on the court is very important, giving my best effort, and sacrificing myself to succeed. There are no options to fail, but only opportunities to succeed!
