I was first introduced to volleyball while in middle school through day camps, but never had the opportunity to play until I started high school. I played all around as an outside hitter on the freshmen team. Although I was inexperienced, I caught on quickly.
My sophomore year I played libero on the JV team as team captain and also played as a defensive specialist on the Varsity team. That year I earned the Ram Award at my school. The Ram Award is awarded to a player who has a positive attitude and is an all around team player. After my high school season that year, I began to play club volleyball. On my club team I played outside hitter.
My junior year I played libero on my Varsity team and kept the goal in mind of making a power team for the club season. This year I earned the award of defensive player of the year and reached my goal. I played up on an 18 power team for Atlanta Extreme Volleyball Club. For AEVC I played all the way around as an outside hitter.I earned the coach's awards at the end of the season.
My senior year has started out with a bang. I played libero on my high school varsity team. During my season we won the silver bracket of the Gwinnett County tournament. We achieved second place in 6AAAAAA area 8 which sent us to the state tournament. We made it to the sweet sixteen before losing to the number one team in state. I was awarded top scholar athlete for the program and defensive player of the year for the varsity team. I plan to play club volleyball again this upcoming season.
I continue to grow and enjoy the sport more everyday. I look forward to playing volleyball throughout my college career. I believe that playing a team sport is extremely beneficial. As a member of a team you learn important skills such as teambuilding. This is a skill you use not only on the court but in everyday life. Some of my best friends are also my teammates. I also appreciate that volleyball forces me to be disciplined physically and mentally.
Most importantly, my goal is to use the life skills I have gained as an athlete to pursue a degree and successful career in my field of study.
